Okay now this book is good and it illustrates the pitfalls of urban survival as well as the need to have a group (the community banded together to defend themselves).

My wife saw the book and asked me what it was about which gave me an opening to talk about prepping a little bit. She asked me if it was because of this book why I was putting stuff in the basement, I told her no I was doing that before I read the book. We did get into a bit of a debate about faith and wisdom. She was using the "I got faith that God will provide" argument while I was trying to point out the Godly Wisdom of having some stockpile in the house. I also referenced Proverbs "In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, the foolish man devours all that he has" she asked me if I had got that from the book and I said no "Dave Ramsey". She acknowledged that the verse had wisdom, thank you Jesus!! However later in our discussion she was trying to use the Israelites leaving Egypt and getting manna from heaven and water from a rock as a reason to not have anything set aside and she also was confusing Godly Wisdom with Man's wisdom. She also used the "Why stockpile up when someone would just try and take it from us", I left this one alone for now because I didn't want to get into the whole guns in the house with 2 toddlers debate.

So my question to all of you is "How do I show her that Godly Wisdom and Faith work hand in hand and that being prepared is fulfilling both?" Examples of scripture or other sites on this specific topic would be great appreciated.

I am hoping that the movie will come out before its too late and that I can get her to see it, I think that would help her to understand.

I remember reading about Daniel? who was in Egypt and recommended that the pharoh stock up something like 7 years worth of food, and when the drought or whatever it was hit, they survived. I'm sure some of the Biblical scholars here can point out the exact verse. I would tell her about Hiram. Seems Hiram prayed for 20 years to win the lottery. Every day, he would pray and pray. After the 20 years, he walked out into his front yard and looked up at heaven. He said in an anguished voice, "God, I've prayed and prayed, and I still haven't won the lottery!" A booming voice comes down from on high and tells him, "Hiram, BUY A TICKET!"

I would also point out to her that the Lord helps those who help themselves, eh?

I like to use the illustration of Noah and the ark. What would have happened if Noah did not build the ark that God told him too? They would have died also.

I like the verse Proverbs 22:3 or 27:12
Pro 22:3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.

GOD will provide if you have done your part. It bothers me when I hear people say that, then sit back and wait on God to act. It reminds me of a joke:

The police were going door to door warning everyone to evacuate because the river was rising. One door they came to, the man said "GOD will save me".
The river continued to rise and he was forced to move everthing to the second floor of his house. A man in a boat came by and offered to save him. Again he said "GOD will save me".
Pretty soon the second story was flooded and he was forced to get on the roof of his house. A helicopter came by and tried to save him and yet again he said "GOD will save me".
It wasn't long before the house was completely covered and the man died and went to heaven. He confronted God with "Why didn't you save me, GOD?"
And God said " I sent you the police, a boat and a helicopter. Why did you stay in the house?"
Now, that is really not funny, but people continue to think that way.

I am reading this book now (at Chap.5) and I am still pissed that the guy, John, throws cigarette butts out on the ground on his OWN Property no less... Must look nice...

As for the old folks home, with what they are going through, I have a hard time reconciling wishing someone would just walk through that place putting the "no hope" one out of their misery with what we believe to be the "right thing."

You're right about the nursing home scene. Everytime I pass by one I think of that description. However, keep reading - there is HOPE!

it is a good motivational read for those who have come to "prepareing" over the last 4 years.......not enough camo, guns, tanks, russian zombieparatroopers for me... :P..i did read it and so did my wife and others she passed it on to. Good read to have , but like many shtf style /post apoc books, it is a "what not" to do.
Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

I agree, which is why I got the book from the Library... I knew better than to buy it as it is, what you said, not enough serious survival stuff...

The main guy, John, I kept wishing he was going to open up a basement and pull out the guns, ammo and preps and his buddies would show up to ride it out and pull security... I'm at Chap. 5 and I don't have hope that will happen...

dont get me wrong it is a good read. Because it doesnt have the sterotypical "gun room" and gun buddies to come hold down the fort, it hits home to those who are not into it like that . " oh john ,he is normal, like me....."
That and the issues with his kid make folks wanna read/feel sorry for him and it helps hit home. That is the one main thing that will get people talking " wow..if only he had done xyz.......". When people talk they think things out, i was surprised at some of the people that we loaned the book out to that started making small talk about it afterwards.....
It's like patriots,,,just the other side of the spectrum..;p

The book is one of the reason I started prepping in ernest. I agree protus, John is everyman. When he talked about how easy it would have been to buy that extra bag of rice, etc., he spoke volumes.

If you go to the writer's web site, you'll discover he is a professor of history and a well respected for his work on the civiil war. He explains that after he became aware of the EMP threat, he wanted to educated people about what could happen if an EMP happens.

I hear they're making a movie - wonder if it'll be any good.

Excellent book! I'd also suggest 'Lights Out' for another read about the aftermath of an EMP.

                            @elittle,
A great quote to live by that might help with your wife, "Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst."
That quote helps keep me grounded in the world of today and the world of tomorrow.

Which is why I cut him some slack for calling a MAGAZINE a "clip."

I am now beginning Chap. 7... I see some people went to the old folks home to help... but what could they do? No water, no meds, no power, nothing... Just wipe their foreheads of the sweat as they died a slow death in agony?
