  • Going Hunting - Youth Season

I'm taking my daughter out for youth gun season this weekend. I do love a good fall hunt.
I hope anyone else who is going has good luck and gets to enjoy nature and quality time with their kids!

Here in NY the weekend before the regular season for most seasons is "youth weekend" when only hunters under 16 can legally hunt. This whole year is pretty much "youth season" for me since it is my son's first year hunting. So instead of chasing deer this weekend (you must be 14 to legally hunt deer in NY) I will be hunting turkey and ducks with him instead. :)

Good luck on the hunt. Although any day out hunting with your daughter by defination is good.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

Well we are back she got a 8point 140lb (first buck) and a 70lb doe! Meat and more meat! We had a great time and used some of the down time to start fires with the little sparkie and ferrous rod. The weather was beautiful, this youth season is great, no pressure on the deer yet and good weather. Used a Rossi single shot 243 100gr sp winchester ammo at 95yds and 120 yds respectively on public land in western Oklahoma.

Very nice buck, that's what we'd call a 3x3 here in WA. Is the Rossi the Youth gun, the one with interchangeable barrels?

It is the youth gun, we dont have any other barrels. My son bought it from a co-worker last year for $100 and I put the scope on it. heck of a deal. It shoots adequate, the only complaint is the skinny barrel heats up real quick.

Thanks, our Field & Stream Club auctioned on off this spring. I've been thinking about getting one for my wife.

Matt, congrats to you and your daughter. I can still remember my hunting trips as a kid with my Dad.

It's a good rifle for what it is. I am impressed with the 243 just avoid the 80gr varmit rds I saw a failure once when a buddy slipped one in by accident trying to finish a wounded deer. It failed to penetrate the shoulder and instead went down the leg.
