  • Women and fighting

Dramatic video has surfaced showing a female Kurdish fighter laughing off a bullet that narrowly whizzed by her head during a sniper fight reported to have taken place in Raqqa. The bullet can be seen exploding in a wall inches from the fighter’s head.

Never underestimate women fighting. They can do more than we give them credit for.

This is funny to me because not too long ago the family went to a long distance shoot. We borrowed a friend's Barrett while we were there, having thought to bring ammo with us ahead of time.

So a couple of "guys" next over to where we were set up- about 15 yards- came over early on. The guy didn't introduce himself, didn't say hello, just kind of abruptly points to the Barrett and says "do you have a schedule for that?"

    "Schedule?"

    "For shooting it."

"Shooting what?" I really didn't know WTF he was talking about.

    "Shooting the fifty."

It starts to dawn on me. "Uuum, ok. Yeah it's not ours so we won't be shooting it all day if that's what you mean." He turns and walks away.

We shoot other rifles for most of the day without shooting that rifle, including all of us making regular hits on the steels at 388 yards with the AKs (you know, that "hundred yard gun" LOL) Next steel out from there was well over 550 and it was hard to confirm hits further out than that. I need a quality spotting scope but for the money invested in that and the once or twice a year true 800 yard value of a good spotting scope I would just assume put the money towards more NV or thermal. The Steiner binoculars work well to about 600 yards and that's more than our standard ranges in our part of FloriGaBama.

Finally the people to the other side of us move to another spot so we move down. Now we have double the space between us and "the girlz" (the guy that asked about the "schedule") so we start shooting the fifty. Unfortunately our line of sight to some of the farthest targets is gone, so we are down to the farthest being just a hair under 1,000 yards. Well hell we bought ammo for this thing and C was nice enough to let us borrow it. My wife probably shot it more than I did. I can be sure of more than a few good hits at 1,000 yards. For a rifle we were not familiar with I think we did fine and the rifle is certainly very capable. Now to try to scrape up the money to buy it if I can.

The "girlz" ("schedule" guy and friends) didn't say anything more, and someone not far on the other side of them had been shooting a fiddy all day long intermittently. I wonder if they "scheduled" it with the girlz or not?
As we are driving home my wife asks what the hell was all of that about with them this morning? I told her I think they figured we were going to shoot it all day, or were otherwise scared of it or something, who the hell knows! She says "well I could have loaned them a tampon if they needed it!!" LMAO ROTFLMAO "I could have just said "oh, that time is it? OK girlz here you go, and handed them you know some feminine protection. Then I could have gone back to shooting my feminine protection."

Our family is a bunch of smart arses.... Now in reality we didn't say anything to those guys and I was nice despite their lack of tact. And I get it, that rifle makes a helluva shock wave. But it's a fricking long range shoot, your going to find rifles like that there. But common sense says someone probably isn't going to shoot them all day at $3. per round....

Funny story. Yes, I have seen someone at a range complain when a woman was shooting a 41 mag pistol. Yes a man(?) complaining about the noise/blast from a hunting revolver. Her response was classic, "grow a pair," and she kept shooting. Not to worry though, if things do go south, I'm sure that the UN has strict rules concerning safe spaces for large-bore guns and artillary.

I do my best to just ignore buttheads at the range, and if confronted, my standard reply is to laugh, and ask them if they really think for a moment, that I feel anything they say is of importance. And then a polite "good day"

I would rather be directly behind a .300 win mag then next to it and would rather be next to a fifty then next to the .300 win mag. Those guys should have manned up...you are at a rifle range...suck it up

The flip side of this to be aware of is the natural tendency for a man not to want to fight a woman.

We have had it ingrained in our psyche to not hurt a woman.

I've found myself in bad situations a time or three experiencing that during training. I remember at a Systema seminar during free work having a woman take me to the ground. I quickly put her in a triangle choke and only moderately tightened it up (choke mainly using legs with one of opponents arm's in blocking one carotid and your leg blocking other one). With her trapped arm she brought her elbow down on my privates pretty hard- YOOOUUUUCCHHH! She tried to roll and I rolled with her changing it to an arm bar and we rolled half way across the gym with her smacking on me all the while LOL.

Recently at an FOF team tactics class using UTM training ammo, I was close to the objective and the other team had a 15 year old girl on their team. She was one of the ones left back at their "flag" to protect it. She had the drop on me as I got close but her gun jammed (AR after all....) and when I heard her voice saying "stoppage" I ducked behind cover versus firing at her. Her partner whacked me with a UTM. I had her position and could have shot her and didn't. Now I had "shot" numerous people by that point in the class and had not hesitated or "felt" a thing about it. Why was this different? I submit it was because it was a girl. I got "killed" because of it.

This is one thing in our male psyches we have to break or a lot of us are going to pay the price for it one day.
