  • BUGOUT Magazine by ASG Editors

There I was, minding my own business, stocking my cart full of ON SALE canned goods at my local Kroger (typical mainstream grocery store), and what do I see on the magazine rack, eye level, front row as I pass by? BUGOUT Magazine!

OK, "prepping" has truly become somewhat mainstream... The non-glossy, but full-color cover had a bad-arse looking Jeep and topics like: Exit Plan, Cheat Death & Survive Disaster, Must Have Items Every Bunker Needs, Fact -vs- Fiction ~ Long-Term Fuel Storgae Tips, Build the Ultimate 72-Hour Bag, and of course, a BUYERS GUIDE... :p

I have not read it yet, just got done rotating some cans around, but I must admit it looks cool and has some interesting topics... Now I need to see if I actually learn something, or if it is full of inaccurate assumptions, marketing hype, and untested gear...

    Anyone else read this magazine?

Picked it up at our local Publix, they sell several decent gun rags and prep mags... Noticed a lot of the gun rags have survival and prep sections as well.

New ASG has the guy that blew his finger off on Doomsday Dunskies listed as the "King of survival" and writing a crappy by line.

Run by literally the most incompetent people in the magazine industry- Beckett Media, aka Engaged Media also IIRC.

Read the posts I made previously about some of the insanely stupid things they did as far as business goes. I've literally never found anyone as totally messed up in business as them.

I noticed in some of the prep mags the articles give you just enough rope to get one in trouble, if you didnt know better. Much like the Saturday and Sunday morning car guy shows do... hey thats easy, they did it in a half hour,,,I can do that.

          I wanna believe ......

However ..most articles written by guys who 10 years about have never slept outside their backyard don't sit well with me.
Same types who balked when id say "you have to use your BOB ..." but would preach about the great quality of their 20$ voodoo tactical pack or how an old issue over seas bag was the best pack.
Most so ignorant to trail life /hiking would brag that such packs were perfectly well suited for a BOB...
Anything can be done...but do you run the tour de France on a huffy or a fully tricked out race bike?

Guess that's my issue. I'm like that web wise now as well. I don't need "justa"anybody expounding the virtues of gear they've never tested or used for any length of time! Be it on paper or the web.
Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

I read a few articles and skimmed through the ones not applicable to me, like $150k Unimog-type bugout trucks and Batman-looking SUV's, and my impression is what RobertJ said, "Just enough rope to get you in trouble." But for entry-level or the curious who see it while walking by the grocery store, it did have some level-headed advice, info, and tips...

But as suspected, they had lots of untested gear as well, just regurgitating manufacturer comments and claims. Some of it was quality gear, that we know works as designed, but others were questionable. They had some headlamps in there made by Vitchelo (never heard of them) that looked like a re-branded cheap Energizer headlamps that now are useful to only household tasks. Nor did they talk about buying QUALITY batteries and how to avoid battery leakage damage. They didn't talk about the benefits of the Lithium AA/AAA batteries in bugout devices (never seen one leak, hold a full charge for a long time). Nor did they mention rechargables and solar chargers. (One of my areas of constant frustration due to batteries leaking over time)

But this is definitely the GQ or Tabloid version to the scared, huddled masses...

Best I can say, is that I did learn a few things and I did learn some cool tips and ideas, especially as I am in the middle of redesigning the GHB (Get Home Bag) and short-term disaster BOB's... The long-term BUGOUT bags are a way different and more complex topic...

as long as I have been working on preparedness, my modest gun accumulation, my outdoor skills...........if I don't know more than a slick cover magazine, I have been wasting my time. :)
