So let's wargame this, kind of a "what if..." deal.

Two people are out in Las Vegas for a conference. The stuff hits the fan and planes are grounded.

He was smart enough to rent a car versus just taking taxis, so they have transportation.

Gear is minimal- two Glock 26's, approximately 200 rounds of ammo and about six mags, couple knives, clothes mostly warm weather and dress clothes. Couple thousand in cash and we will assume CC is still viable at the start of things.

The goal is to get home to Florida as quick as possible while also avoiding bad areas, potential target cities, etc.

Go to a small airport borrow a small Cessna type plane , borrow a pilot if needed get all the gas you can in the back seat(don't get a 2 seater ) have him fly as far as poss give em 1000 bucks or offer a place to stay if your lucky you made it close to home.

your in vegas... my first concern is water. Maybe you can drive out and maybe you get stuck someplace but there is no ground water outside of the fountains on the strip. Then Gas.. I head north through utah then east staying clear of the major cities farther south. this of course is dependant on season. if its winter and im in a little sedan then i gotta go the southern route...

Just for fun- wargame

Ditch the items you don't need. Get items you do need. I'd still go back to basics shelter (car), water (lots of it) and water filter, fuel for car, more fuel, get to airport as CPT said and try and acquire a plane and pilot if possible. If not drive to next small airport and try there, but always be heading homeward. Map of US will be important so you can stay on secondary roads and away from potential road blocks. If possible have cans or containers for extra fuel and fill often even if you have to siphon from an abandoned vehicle maintaining 360 security. Buy fuel from backroad stations that would possibly help a fella get home. Depending on number of people, drive in shifts...two hours on at a time and rotate. Of course look at map and have the right person driving when in dangerous areas and all hands on deck for security. Watch for potential choke points on maps if map is detailed enough. If you have a HAM have repeaters programmed or at least a list. Become part of AMRRON https://www.amrron.com and continue to attempt contact for assistance.
Like P says, have contacts prearranged, and two (or more) lists made in case people are separated. Have a plan for all involved for all foreseeable circumstance.....separation, capture, death, injury, etc. Acquire a basic first aid kit as you may encounter trouble and you may need to apply first aid in the vehicle while driving.
Prayer and good luck will be needed as well as that will take a bit of travel time.

I concur with above... You did say get home to Florida as quick as possible," so I would charge the plane on the credit card if you have the available credit. CC as much as possible and worry about paying it off when home safe and sound.

Otherwise, it is a LONG HAUL from Vegas to Florida and no easy way to get there. Too many variables. I would have to study maps and maybe talk up the "Hometown" sections of the States I would travel through in places like AR15.com or other sites. Get locals advice BEFORE I would need to travel to Vegas to plan an escape plan....

Like someone else said, I would drop any useless weight. But did not see anyone mention that if CC (Credit Cards) are still up and I am pretty sure this is "THE EVENT", I would stop in at the first gun store and "go to town" to get a set-up for each person in the car.

Like the others said pickup an Atlas and drive in shifts... Keep the tank full at every stop. And just drive... Stay off main roads and avoid big cities. Good times and interstates you can make it in 2-3 days. Avoiding the interstate and cities you are talking more like 3-5 I would think.

Im going a bit different route. CC will buy the needed supplies cash on hand for when/if CC electric goes down. Purchase some of the supplies as mentioned above gas, Rand McNally for every state driving through. Quality Bikes (pedal), BOB components (was not mentioned in OP) water/food, And make my way to nearest coast. Sell, trade, turn in vehicle if still in possession. Rent/aquire/etc. medium/large boat to make way around gulf coast to FL. Keep bikes in case of fuel availability/cost etc. when reaching FL coast and cant manage transport you have bikes still.

To re-iterate- all planes are grounded.

It's a rental car. I've kept them a day or so late before, but I would assume after a few days, it would probably be considered theft.

BTW, this isn't that outrageous of a scenario- happened to a buddy of mine at 9/11 actually. Only he DIDN'T have a rental car and when they went to get one, they were ALL sold out. I've personally always rented a car, even if I only put 21 miles on the darn thing, just to have the freedom of having personal transportation.

How would you buy firearms via regular channels in a state half a country away from your home state? I am familiar with buying rifles in neighboring states, but it would be a good drive before a neighboring state is reached.

OK once again, SHTF plane's grounded, Martial law! Turn in all guns etc: Tuff!! Are you going to do what the nice guys from DHS all tell you. Get that plane if you can , even an EMP won't stop all the older small aircraft, If your retired mil. ask at the nearest base for a lift . You will need your Mil. ID but they will give you a ride, even part way ?. Or back to the little plane under the radar , so don't answer the radio. stay under radar stay away from no fly areas . If that fails forget the car. Can't hide it , your stopped ::: your in a possible sieve after the road blocks fill your rear with lead..OOP's lead is not (BIG O) friendly, steel and brass bullet's.GET motor cycles you can avoid things , you can hide , they are fast , they don't use to much gas, you can carry a lot of stuff on one, EXAMPLE look at asia and how they use these. If you have guns !! OH MY a friend to gov. you are not, unless you are a gov.agent in a gov.. lock down or declared emergency, you are a target /open season on you.
As a past PEM I am here to tell you , authorities are not here to help you. Yes there are the exceptions but over all , Your meat.
Speed and reaction time will matter , don't dally.

Having made it from 29 palms, ca to Jacksonville, nc in 41 hours before it can be done fast, but that is with 24 hour gas stations intact and operating still. If those are still operating then no problem. We were in a honda accord and we were flying and driving in shifts. 6 hour shifts during day and 2 hours during the night, loaded crammed in with seabags, garment bags and various sundry bags. Everytime a seat change a bag would roll out. LOL.

But, I would think that there would be problems with gas immediately if there were a major event. People would kill the supply in a day, like they always do in an emergency. So you may get gas in vegas, but it would be slim pickin's there on out.

When I travel I always plan for an EMP. I look at all bike shops in the locale closest to my hotels. Then I look for the closest or best Surplus stores closeby. Then I always travel with silver coins for barter, emergency high limit Credit card, and cash. So in this scenario, I head to closest bike shop, pick up a couple mountain bikes with bike rack for whatever car, etc I have, tire repair kits, small socket tool set for repairs on the road. Then head to surplus store and pick up some basics stuff. Try to trade with locals at surplus store for a 10/22 and some ammo if possible. g26 is nice but wont put any food on the table.

My carry-on is always a swissgear backpack with laptop and ipad with lots of approved for TSA inspection survival stuff. IFAK, Survival kit in Adventure Medical kit with meds and Lifestraw, 100 yard spool 80 lb test Spiderwire, 550 cord, blastmatch, toiletries, 27 watt folding solar panel, poncho liner, etc. So dumping non-essential gear, laptop, network cables, etc, I fill my backpack with stuff picked up at surplus store in my swissgear pack.

After surplus store (where we pick up as many Jerry cans as we can find, wally world or a dollar general/store is visited and car is loaded with canned goods and water. Loaded up with gear, bikes and as much gas as possible we head on down the road hoping that hoover dam is not a natural choke point for some radicals to heist all of our gear.

When, not if, gas runs out, fill saddle bags on bikes, don backpacks and head out on bikes hoping to make 100 miles a day. Route would be between I40 till Texas then the small roads between i40 and i20 avoiding the major cities as much as possible. Probably riding at night and resting during the day if on bikes. 100 miles a day on bikes is not ridiculous if you can get to Texas in the car and 200 isnt out of the realm of madness if you have a better than average fitness level.

If on bikes then your supply of food will be augmented by hunting (if you can trade for a 10/22) and trying some trapping with spiderwire.

Like the wargame. Something I do, probably too much. :D

Didn't notice, it was late when I posted, that CC were still up. Guns may be hard to get, but ammo should be available if you're at the store fast. Stock up on more 9mm and maybe get a bow, and defensive blades and machete. You will need some sort of shelter if/when you run out of fuel, so think a Protus tarp for each person. Cordage for tarps and other uses. Flashlights, blast match of some sort. Bug spray, sunscreen, mosquito netting, MH foods, water carriers of some sort and procure bikes as someone said. Tie them to the roof of the car, who cares about scratches...lol, cause more damage will be done when/if you ditch the car. Now another option for gas might be station tanks. If you can procure a vehicle fuel pump and long hose, and electrical wire, you can possibly siphon from an underground tank using the battery on your car for power.

Or forget all this stuff and call AAA?.........

Probably would opt for the roll of the dice- (Vegas pun)

1. Get the fudge out of Vegas valley area. I always rent small'ish cars with good gas mileage, definitely not 4x4 but stretching the gas budget.
2. Atlas, as many gallons of water in jugs, pile of energy drinks and portable short term stable food from a larger AM/PM or Circle K.
3. Chances of finding gas cans are probably slim- on the razor edge, time spent collecting and shopping equals time not on the road = time perhaps walking later if things get worse. Perhaps some 2 liter bottles for a covert fill up if possible- gas station folks aren't too happy about these sorts of things.
4. Call rental car place and extend contract. Just noticed this last trip wherein Alamo added a clause that their is a "maximum" to the rental contract. Never had that previously and I have literally gotten off planes in the wrong city, rented a car and drove home before (long story, not a mistake).
5. Plot course that as much as possible avoids big cities. Drive like hell.... Sleep in shifts, drive drive baby.
