The whole family are students of history. On a long car ride recently we were discussing some European history events.
We talk at time about cascading events- like you know the economy crashes, then a civil war ensues, then "at the battle of Georgetown" the missiles are launched and now it's a nuclear event.
But think about this-
Say your a German, born in the early 1900's. Maybe your too young for WWI but you have the hardships of rationing, etc. and while German cities weren't bombed, etc. in that war, it was still war. So the war ends, reparations are laid on Germany and that cripples the nation. Then the experiment of the Weimar republic happens, hyperinflation, "a coup a week" time period happens. Perhaps you join the Freikorps (SP?) thinking you will help the country keep safe from the red hordes trying to take over (and they were). Maybe you get involved in some street fighting. Later a charismatic Austrian leads a bunch of people in a half way attempt at a coup, it fails and he goes to jail. Later he is elected.
Think of the irony there with the 60's "revolutionaries" in our country that are now ELECTED officials, or nice folks like Jesse Jackson and avowed Black Panther communist in the 60's. Now Sharpton he was probably just pushing drugs and snitching on the mob then.... LOL Couldn't resist.
So next thing you know things start clamping down- gun laws, travel restrictions, etc. You may or may not believe in the end result so you may or may not be concerned.
Next up, WWII, no way you are not going to be in the service then if your 14 to 80 years old. So our mythical guy there fights in WWII, hopefully not on the Eastern front.
The whole time he's thinking- If I could just get back home once this is all over with....
He does, only it's on the "East side" of Berlin, damn rotten luck....
First off, he's probably interned for a number of years, hopefully he wasn't a party member. If he is, maybe eventually he simply goes from telling people he works for the gestapo to that he works for Stasi. Meet the new boss..... same as the old boss.... Type of thing.
Either way, dude now lives under communism till what, 89 or so?
If you think about it, it's a pretty damn crappy life- one load of crap dumped on you after another.
SHTF could be that way also- "We are so glad the war (WWI) is over" goes into "oh damn hyperinflation" moves into "we are at war again" goes into "damn communists are controlling everything..."
Kinda depressing when you think about it like that. Yet a generation or so lived that way.
