My father wanted to die at home .. my mom made sure his wishes were.met and I went home to do what a son must do. I watched my father languish in pain and erode to nothing more than a shell of his former self. For a young man it is a horrible thing to watch your father go through and if he asked I would have ended his pain By od'ING him on morphine. I think it's easy to say that things are black and white. But when you watch a loved one in pain begging for death it confuses the absolutes ....
My grandma was like that. The last night I saw her she was a shell. Doped up by the staff at shady acres soylent factory10 .her eyes where just black holes.....
Its noble to say "charge the line and hold off the hordes " to save a few when mortality wounded....or to say "in your sleep " its just not the case in reality
    Reality sucks.
Thinking....planing..and accepting reality can suck even more.

We are here to discuss opinions openly ...vent....debate...you name it.

Me if I'm on patrol with sheep dog...gun nut...and I take a round to the guts...what then....enemy is closing contact.....SD is packing my bowels back in and Gunnut between pulling security can only joke to me that all my sheets got my new multicam all dirty ...we are under 2 miles from our retreat....enemy has us outnumbered .....do I force them to evac me...just to prolong a brutal end........

Does this mean I want to off myself...or imply it. I know it is a scenario that those of us that train have gone over in our heads more than once!! Does that mean all of us need to be evaluated because we are discussing the reality of that situation?

Remember in today's "internet "land a lot can be assumed /taken out of context or USED out of context against us if so chosen. BY OTHERS outside of this forum!
We shouldn't be giving ANYONE any free gas to put on the fire..!

Lil side trivia on one flew over -
All the staff and "crazies " were real. It was filmed in a real mental hospital.
the short fat actor who thought he was free to go and wanted cigarettes -got so into his character and wouldn't break it that staff and the producers got concerned.
in the scene where crachet is lecturing the group Nicholson ...calls the nurse by her 1st name. Her reaction was real...because he used her REAL 1st name. Iirc she was a real Dr there iirc (been a while I could be wrong)

IMHO the best scenes were pre and post electrotherapy with "chief " and his return to the "group " circle.
Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

I actually haven't seen that movie but heard about the names/conditions from others. It's on the watch list now- just not around the time we head down for a visit!! Pics sent of my nephews and her at this new place are like night and day compared to "Underworld."

        rmpl,
I do not understand all the comments about wanting to kill yourself... do you need to go get treatment for a head injury... you work in the medical field or something similar.. Go To the Doctor and get treatment.
and if you want to kill yourself --- do so! I don't think you should, but I don't live around you.
if you think that you will need killing in the future make a plan for it.. prepare for the event...
it sounds like you want to make something official for everyone???
to me, prepare for what you think you will need and just my opinion it is like any other prep, it is probably best that we don't
        go tell the world..

everybody else who is talking about how horrible they are.....
I too have been in smelly, loud, unclean facilities,
        However,

I have been to and slept in 2 different facilities that were
        not loud..
        not smelly
        no nakedness
pleasant workers (for the most part)
        clean
        I ate the food
        I talked with the workers

        guys,
this is like buying a car...
you can get a good one.. or a piece of sheet car...
        you choose...

if it has all of these horrible characteristics don't go there.... help your loved one find a clean facility.

if you have to go visit an associate that you love who is at a nasty place, it is your responsibility to get them out!
if you have to go visit an associate that you barely know and it is nasty, that is not in the "loved one" category,
tread lightly. make your own decision whether to tell their associates about the nastiness that aunt Susie is sitting in.

it could easily be that they don't give a sheet about aunt Susie and are hoping Susie will find her demise sooner than later.

        let me repeat...
I've slept in 2 facilities... several times at each... all this stuff yall are talking about did not exist at either. one in a prosperous booming area of the state, another 200 miles away in an area that is declining..

        here's what I think.
not wanting to offend.. but I feel like someone needs to say it plainly.

folks should plan for their older days..
plan financially.. put away resources for the time that the sheet will hit the fan... (or bed sheets or pajamas)
the memory ward that I'm familiar with cost 5000 a month...
        social security won't cover that...

save money or precious metals or whatever you want to in order to provide for that event.

if your loved one is not saving money (or buying insurance) for that time of their life then you do it for them..
but only do so if you really care about them... if you don't care and want them to hurry up and kick the bucket
then don't plan for that time...

to use a term I've seen on here.. "idjits" won't plan for that time.. others will.
        it is up to you..
        and your family
        and your loved ones..

hey, here is a plan option.
don't do nothing... trust in Obama to take care of your loved one.
demand and shout that Obama wipe their rear end, feed them and clean up after them.

        your choice...
go on a cruise or buy insurance
buy an extra rifle or save the money
go to a training school or buy the insurance
care for your loved one or don't
hey, maybe they will never need an assisted living facility
or maybe they will never need around the clock care.

hmm. I suspect I got long winded...
I do hope I didn't offend... but it began to look clear that someone needed to remind you guys about prepping for this particular event.

        RR,
Growing up I assume we lower to middle class. My Dad retired from NCR with a pension. He died after battling cancer two years after his retirement and that used up most of Mom's savings. She was a housewife because that's the way families were back then, but she ironed other families clothing and cleaned used appliances for extra money. She was a hard working woman.

To call someone an "idjit" because she didn't plan for an extended stay in a nursing home is harsh.

On the topic of finding the right home it's really easy to say just spend the money. My wife and I toured 7 different homes, some really nice and others hellholes. Mom was an escape artist and that narrowed down the choices. The all had electronic locks with keypads but she required more security. That coupled with her limited income narrowed it to four, so we chose the best of the four.

On the subject of $5000 dollar a month homes. My Mothers sister just passed after an extended stay at a home. I don't know the monthly price but I do know that when she entered she had $ 280,000 in savings. In less than a year the home wanted to move her from the "nice" assisted living section to the memory unit because her money ran out. This was one of the facilities that you could stay overnight in.

Some of the things you are saying such as "care for your loved or don't" or "take a cruise or buy insurance" offend me even if you follow it up with "I do Hope I didn't offend".

I will pray for you RR.

My day job takes me into a lot of diferent medical services. Doctors, Hospitals, veternarians, Dentists, Labs, etc. the questions I get from some doctors and nurses will make your blood freeze solid. "How do I tell if my Oxygen/nitrous/nitrogen/etc. is full or empty?" This is one I get a LOT.
AS for smells I can walk in and immediatly tell a good one from a bad just through smell. I once caught an excapee from a Hospice, asked office manager if anyone was susposed to be in oxygen storage room... they didnt even know he was gone. This was on complete opposite wing from where patients are housed.

If I hadn't been too late and my post quoted, I would have tamed my views back some... LOL! It could, and did, get misunderstood...

If you are around... I am going to make you haul my shot-up, lard arse back to camp, dripping guts on that multicam poser-ware of yours, then keep everyone awake with my howls of pain... :o

If I'm with you, I'll do my best to fix ya up and let you walk your own a$$...er, I mean, self back. We will need the extra gun power as you may be walking slow, but still walking  . We will make it back....from there, well who knows.

All kidding aside, what P has said is what I've said many times before. There will be immediate death and injuries that cause a slow and painful death when TSHTF. Discussing things like this within your group/family will be important. There will also be slow deaths due to lack of medicines (insulin and oral meds for chronic illnesses). These won't necessarily be painful, but will be painful to watch your loved one slip away.

Question, and you don't have to answer here...but do answer to yourself, what will happen when 30-90 days go by without your blood pressure med(s)? Your pressure will climb and eventually reach a point that it will get significantly higher and you possibly have a stroke. This may or may not be your demise, but if not you may require a significant amount of care and man hours to keep you fed, bathed, clean up your BMs, brush your teeth....you get the point. Who is going to do that? These are things that need to be thought about. We always think of gunshot wounds, but I believe there will be more deaths from other problems, but that is only my opinion.

Sorry for the thread drift LD3

Guns and gear are cool, but bandages stop the bleeding!

brings an old memory to mind...
I was watching a military activity
and introduced myself to an older gentleman nearby.
we were watching the soldiers simulate an attack. and friendly got shot
and his team checked him for injuries then quickly drug injured away.
                        gentleman was david grange.

2 pts for the first guy who can tell us what I was watching.
                        1 pt for location.
                        *without googling"
