  • what did you learn last time in the field

its been a while for me but the last time I was out I tried to boil water for coffee and oatmeal without getting out of my bed.. I was doing soo good. I had a bunch of freeze dried blue berries in the water for the oatmeal It was going to be PERFECT.. The when I reached down to turn off the burner the pot fell over ,, there went the berries AND my perfect breakfast. Not a huge deal but it was cold out and I was hungry so I had to decide... go back to bed or get out of the rack,, suck it up and start over... GRANTED... not as bad as waking up cold as hell in the mountains of Idaho but still... I seriously wanted that blueberry oatmeal ......

Could have been worse, could have spilled all in your bag.

Had the family out shooting Friday a little bit. My son is getting quicker followups with the Aimpoint PRO and he's getting to like it. Worked on trigger control to maximuze efficiency with follow up shots- he was letting trigger all the way out after first shot instead of just to the reset point.

Worked some sitting and kneeling positions, reviewed some basic movement stuff.

Been spending more time out at night getting everyone used to the OTAL IR laser

Insects !!! what a pain in the you know what. Think ahead put bug dope in the preps or learn the herbal way. These bugs could ruin a ambush or picnic. I forgot how bad they could be, they do not care what rifle you have and it is hard to get one with the ol,e bowie knife. OH WHAT A WONDERFUL SPRING IN THE WOODS.

low scent or unscented.. I can smell deep woods off a LONG ways away. Some good old fashioned DEET has always worked well for me

They are getting thick down here also. We had a wet winter so it will be a damn summer for them.

Tried all kinds of stuff over the years to combat them. One time tried one of those silly little yellow slinky like wristbands. It worked better than almost anything, LOL.

I used to take so much garlic before an FTX weekend that I was shunned but still got bit.

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

I must admit I have never had to deal with bugs to the extreme you guys out there do. I have though dealt with cold nights that are so bad you just lay there Looking to the east waiting for the sun to rise you don't really sleep you just kind of doze off in that half awake half asleep place. I have been camping where I couldn't take it anymore and got up around 2am to start a fire and warm up. Only to be joined by other guys claiming they wanted to get up and start a fire a hour ago but didn't want to be. THAT GUY. I have since bought better gear but now know how to build a stacked fire that lasts several hours

The best not applied directly to you IMHO is a thermacell. Sit in near your tent...tarp..table and zero mosquitoes. No oder.at all. I have used mine for several years hunting and camping trips. We use a "lantern "style one on the porch since I live In the Mekong Delta.
On person I use natural stuff by cutter iirc. Smells little fruity but works. When I don't want fruity I use blends with picadirn ...they work well. I only use feet on my clothing. In super hot temps it makes my skin blotchy.
For clothing I treat with permanon ...its good for 7-14 wash cycles.
Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

Permethren on clothes not skin. army surplus lasts several wash's. Wally world also sells a version. Army surplus deet on skin , because I have tons of it in green bottles and tubes. If the supply sgt passed it out I thought i'd use it . Awful strong , will eat finish off gun stock, no smell . Bugs do not even land at all, but go out without it,!!! IT IS LIKE A STEPHEN SPEILBURG MOVIE , some days driving out you have to use the wipers to clear the black flies , gnats bugs off windshield just to see and keep em flying.
