there are several ways to use the phrase you used... "turn our back"

in this case... there are 2 stories floating that when Israel came to dc to meet with the president,
usual protocol for any visiting state delegation is that they meet, fuss, discuss, agree, disagree, during the day and then at the end of the day the president will invite the delegation to a state sponsored dinner and
they all put on their happy faces for dinner as they break bread together with the president of the host country...

except that twice now, our leader did the fussing part during the day, and at the end of the day, president got up fussed some more, turned his back on the Israeli's and walked out the door with no invitation to a state dinner .
bottom line... our president representing the u.s.a refused the usual protocol that all nations rec'd
he literally turned his back on them. he refused to "break bread" with them.
it is a sad situation.
