  • What did you accomplish in 2014?

You always see these "what I plan to do this year" type posts around this time period. Similar to "new year's resolutions." Or as the boy calls it after seeing so many flood the gyms the first of the year then be gone by mid January- "New WEEK'S resolutions." As in, most only LAST a week or so.

I'm guilty of not getting everything I wanted to accomplish done. Water system upgrades are still in progress, although the way things are being put into place "the body will function without all the limbs." So being a leg short so to speak, the body continues to function. But it will function better with all the limbs :)

Long term storage upgrades were completed, I posted about some of those- "Paper or plastic?" and the renovations to storage containers.

On the minus side- got very little done in food production upgrades, about a dozen blueberry bushes in, that was about it. One of the broody hens, sat on, hatched out and raised a dozen chickens. Helping to perpetuate the chicken flock.

Physically stayed about the same, been holding at 180-185 now for several years since the cut. Running was no where near as consistent as in previous years but honestly I didn't see much difference in fighting, running drills, carry gear, etc.

Health wise the family fought off a lot of crude this year, with them basically being down for almost 2 months this summer. That affected the amount of things we could get accomplished a good bit. Extended family members on both sides went through various cancers, surgeries and treatment. I spent probably a month hanging around hospitals and doctor's offices this year, none of which involved my health thankfully.

This was a 5th year for us and that means a car rotation if necessary. Two cars, each bought new (alternatively) and kept 10 years. Every five years you probably need to buy a new one. Although we are driving for work considerably less now, so we may be able to extend this in the future. So a good portion of income this year went to saving up and paying cash for a new truck.

Did the normal put back some more food, ammo, etc. deals. Didn't get to too many training classes this year save a couple of Max's classes and some Systema seminars. I've done a "fair amount" of the mainstream weapons classes that honestly I don't get a helluva lot out of too many of them any more.

How was your year? Did it shape up like you wanted to? What are you "carrying over" to 15 on your to do lists?

    2014 was a good year.
Although I turned 66 (my regular retirement age) in October I actually started collecting Social Security in January. The rule is such that in your 66th year, if you are collecting SS and are still working you can earn up to $40,000 without penalty. The difference between waiting until my full retirement age was only $92 per month, and calculations showed I would be 82 before the difference caught up. Once full retirement age is reached you can earn as much as you want without penalty.
I am still working full time and will continue for another year, the SS money will be putting a new roof on the house and be used for savings. We have no mortgage, no vehicle payments, no credit cards, to me a big part of prepping and self reliance is to be as debt free as possible.

I have had a bad knee with bone-on-bone contact for 30 years, and the pain has been bad for 20 of those, but when it got to the point that I could not walk a quarter mile it was time for me to give in and have a total knee replacement. That was back in October and the full healing will take 8 months to a year, but already all that grinding pain is just a memory. And what a difference in outlook on life that brings!!!

Sadly, we had to put our oldest horse down due to medical issues, she was 32 and is buried out by the garden. We are going to plant a tree in the spring to give her plot some shade.

Our chickens are doing well, we have 17 hens and 3 roosters now, much more manageable than the 50 we had at one time. The older girls who were past egg laying age were processed and are in the freezer. Along with one deer and one quarter of a cow.

We have been moving forward on our bulk non perishable food supply as well, and officially have "a bunch".

Life has been good this year. Being debt free and having an income beyond a regular job means I now have the luxury of working on my own terms and I no longer have the worry and stress of a possible layoff.

I have not been keeping up with the forum as I should, but now that physically and mentally I feel better I'm back.

some great things ld and rice.

extended the land boundary by a few acres.
moved sr. female relative 200 miles closer.

worked on increasing storage items... still, no where near where we should be.
added machinery to help with work and got a new chain saw for Christmas! that was sure needed!

      new roof and new hvac.
changing garden to no till and heavy mulch and heavy mulch for all fruit producing trees/vines.
      planted various new

getting to know more folks in community... getting more involved. helping where we can. (we've only been here a few years)
we are the new folks in this town. learning who the good folks are, who the crooks are etc... has been real important...
probably our biggest achievement and obviously this is an ongoing project!

added storage and living space. increased fencing and security systems.

Biggest: Secured a better job with more pay, better benefits, and a lot easier... Left my micromanage boss for a super-laid back boss who basically leaves me alone, but expects me to do my job by my own initiative... Love it! A bit more desk sitting though, but you can't have a perfect job I guess, otherwise it wouldn't be called WORK!

Lost some weight... Not sure how much as I don't use a scale, but down two waist sizes...

More tools and more building skills... Lots of good home project additions...

Daughter is growing up to be a wonderful young woman... So proud of her!

Still holding the faith in spite of not many others understanding it...

A year being healthy and functional is a good year!

Put in some raised beds and figured out what does/doesn't grow well here.

Wife and I attended/passed CERT training. Good to meet firemen and police/figure out their attitudes.

          Upped my food storage some.

          Upped my ammo storage some.

Re-learned how to water bath/pressure can (it'd been about 40 years).

Added a little to my armory.

Got laid off from my job/found a new one. Upside, paycheck continuation...downside, it's in a more urban area. Re-doing my GHB for a more urban environment (ongoing).

2014 was a year of ups and downs for me and my family.

            The Downs:
This time last year my wife and I were expecting our first child, a son. Little did we know that Hunter would be born in 19 days and we would be burying him 4 days later. I had three uncles pass away in 2014. Even with all of the scouting I did prior to the season I did not get an elk. We didn’t improve our food storage much. I didn’t get nearly the time on the Ham radio I had planned and I did not upgrade my license from Tech to General.

            The Ups:
Through all of the pain this last year brought us mine and my wife’s faith, along with our marriage, has grown stronger. The job has been uninspiring but stable. Definitely thankful for that. We continued with our vegetable garden all year. We learned what to do and a lot more of what not to do when it comes to gardening in AZ. I finished up my MBA program. I rebuilt the hunting rifle I bought when I was 15 y/o by putting a new stock and scope on it. I began dabbling in the Dark Side by starting to build my first AR. I got my weight under control and ended the year down 12 lbs from when I started working out. I ended the year by signing up for 1/2 hour guitar lessons every Friday night. I’ll see how I’ve progressed after 6 months and then re-evaluate.

            Plans for 2015:

My wife and I will be trying for another child. We’ll have to see God takes us with this one.
Get a new job that’s more in line with what I want to do. Finish building the AR. Continue gardening. Improve our food storage. Continue working out and eating healthier. Get more practice on the Ham radio and upgrade my license to General. Begin dabbling in leather working. I’ve got the tools now that I need to build my first couple of leather projects. I’ve decided to stop watching TV with the free time that was taken up with my MBA program. Monday nights will be for Ham radio practice. There’s a net that operates every Monday at 7pm. Tuesday nights will be for leather working. Wednesday & Friday nights will be for guitar. Saturday nights for my wife. Sundays will be church & guitar.

I tend to set aggressive goals so we’ll have to see how much of this I do and accomplish this year.

well its been a roller coaster for me lol but not shabby.

lost more weight but seems every 2-3 months i hurt myself again..and so starts the 5-10lbs up..5-10 down game.
wifes buisness has doubled which is awesome!
water storage was doubled(installed a large tank). well pump should be done by next week(contractor giving me issues)

ive learned that a chainsaw is awesome..and an 8lb maul isnt as fun as it was 15 years ago..

ive learned that growing your own food and raising it..has its ups and downs due to weather. valuable lesson for sure.

got some more credentials under my belt(state cert/lic# in a work field) so its helped on the work side of things.

started being proactive in game harvesting here at casa de protus and fishing more. i wanna keep pushing to keep us off the mainstream food.

ive learned to accept my physical limits and tailor my gear/style to it. getting older sucks.

somehow i now own more multicam than any other pattern ;p lol

slowly getting back into the network,,lets be more social with like minded folks than ive been the last 2 years.. and be more visible to the locals(very small town..mayberry kinda small)...

its set in more and more than actually moving and trying to live how some "talk" about on the web isnt a cake walk and has effects that reach further out than just "survival".(isolation from friends/social events etc..this effects my daughter more since shes getting older)....

i miss the old days of my jeep..alice gear,,,jungle boots and not caring if its 98f to camp lol getting old sucks lol
Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

Here's some advice for younger guys: Before you get your "annual prostate poke" make sure the doctor doing the exam has long slender fingers rather than short chubby ones.

                        well,
there was this fella... he was young... low teens...
                        had this horrible stomach ache..
his mom and g'mother were pouring black draught and other home brew down him
knowing that the problem was clogged intestines.
family relative came by and saw what was happening and took young'un to his office as he was a country doctor.
relative country doctor was one of many great big ole brothers.. corn raised farm boys...
                        with big ole fat fingers.
when the young'un saw that glove and those fingers and realized what was about to happen he about went into shock

                        appendicitis...
the good news relative cut the bad stuff out a couple of hours later.
the horrible news... young boy knew to fear the finger!!

sorry guys... I got way off the theme of this thread.

this was advice for moms and their attempt at home remedies,

Added a bit to the LTS of food. Need to continue more this year
Continued with my workout routine and put on another 10 pounds, but kept the same waist size
                          Took some patrolling classes
Re-Vamped my 72 hour backpack and assault pack set-up
                          Stored a bit more ammo
Spent more time at the range
Completed my cold weather gear set-up
                          Stored away more medical supplies
Updated some equipment at our (my wife and I) business to gain more classes/students
Spent as much time as I could with my children as they are now both over 18 years old and will soon be out of the nest. Will see if our training will pay dividends as they continue to grow with God.

On a non-prep side...Took a cruise to Alaska to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary which was worth every penny.
Spent more time with my dada and mom as they keep getting older every year
Protecting the sheep from the wolves that want them, their family, their money and full control of our Country!

Guns and gear are cool, but bandages stop the bleeding!

ATTENTION: No trees or animals were harmed in any way in the sending of this message, but a large number of electrons were really ticked off!

Ooooooooo! I want to do this, maybe in 2015! Easier than hiking, safer than bush plane, maybe even more scenic... I would love to kayak one of the bays though... Maybe with some whales... Still don't trust kayaking with Orca's... Yikes!

Made some new contacts that will make me better prepared, and secured some items that I had for some time on my "wish I had that" list.
Got started on a storage plan for an item that is something we use on a regular basis and is perishable.
Made ready a project that has to wait till warm weather comes back in the spring, and made things ready so that as soon as some cash frees up at the end of next month, then I'll be able to do a project that will make us a bit better prepared in case of a bug-out situation.
