  • Ebola preps! And other just darn good items to possess...

    Some opinions:

I think the N95 masks with the wimpy rubber band straps that you see all over the news lately are borderline JUNK... 3M makes the best ones, but even those do not seal well over my nose and along my face. My glasses are always fogging up while wearing them, no matter how I adjust that stupid aluminum bar on the nose area. I think the design is flawed... I will never buy any more for MY use, YMMV.

What I have been using lately is the RE-USEABLE and cleanable half-facepiece 3M respirators with the round, disk-shaped N95 and P100 filters. These are awesome!!! The 3M 7503 (7500-series) has a silicone cup, exhale valve, inlet valves, excellent straps and a downward exhaust (so it does not fog goggles). This is a NICE mask and gives one the non-military look that full-face gas masks will scream to the frightened public. The cheap $3 goggles go over my glasses and the nose piece of the mask and does NOT fog and has excellent coverage/protection. You can find this one for about $20 in auctions.

The 3M 2291 P100 filters are the BEST of this filter type. The earlier P100 filters, the 3M 2091 is harder to breath through, while the 2291 has 30% better flow. You can get the 2291's for less than $5 on auctions. I have used these while demolishing my back patio to make way for a sunroom/mudroom/dining area and I am uber-impressed with the air flow. Not hard to breath through at all and I have gotten several days of use out of one filter, but in Ebola, you will want to dispose of the filter after one use in an compromised environment.

The much cheaper 3M 2071 N95 filters are also a good choice. I found 50 pairs for $50 just a few days ago on eBay. That is about the cost of ONE pair of P100 gas mask filters.

If need be, I could add a USGI M95 hood to this setup giving good protection to below my shoulders.

Just sharing some cheap, affordable, easy to buy options to full-blown gas masks with expensive P100 filters that are WAY OVERBOARD for Ebola, as the activated carbon of military filters is not needed for Ebola. I would suggest you shop now before supplies dry up. $100 could get you a few mask, goggles and a bunch of filters....

Mine are of the surviveair iirc brand. They use screw in type filters that iirc have 40 mm thread (gotta recheck) ..all the filters are p and pn100 rated..I've got a full face 7800 series 3m..but if I go that route its the m40 ill be sporting.

I agree on the "fit " even on the dual strap vented face mask...there is always leakage.
Even on those half mask proper fit is key. We used to have them fitted at work and they had to do the smell test..with lil ampules of a sour smell...

    Good info...
Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

        a little different angle...
        a fence and a gate
        plenty of food
        water source and filter
way to cook that doesn't depend on utility company

back when bird flu was the hot topic
I stumbled on a doctor I knew... who was also a mayor of midsize town. and a col in the army.
        bottom line,
"rr, get some masks like you see the Japanese wearing... use that to get home.
then stay home... have enough food, water, medicine at home to last and don't leave home.
don't invite your neighbors over to your house... don't go to their house."

Two ways of avoiding infections of any sort.
          1. Have the proper PPE and techniques for donning, doffing and disinfecting.
          2. Avoidance

Very low percentage can do this... If you are one, you are the 1% of a different kind...

Most have mortgages, utilities to pay, essentially not able to pull out of society until Ebola burns itself out.... For we don't even know how long that is. How long until safe to come out of the cocoon?

                  just pretending you know!
                  this is just the internet!
but I live in a rural area.
                  many can "lock the gate"
                  much higher % than 1

most of the folks that have large lots or farms don't have gates!

                  how long? great question.
within the last week a fellow was tested about 35 miles from us.
                  very sobering.

                  rr,
(and I've posted before that I live in a high rise condo! the view is so good looking out over the pool!)

Yeah, people need to start thinking where the line is for them and their family... Factor in all the consequences of each choice, pro and con.

In my situation, I do not really know what a real "ebola pandemic" might look like, so I can only generalize at this stage. I do know that I am not financially able to close the hatch and submerge from society for a year or more. Moreover, ebola is NOT radiation or some airborne virus (yet!), so I am not looking at ebola as fearfully as some others may see it. My Executive Director at my employment is one of the top toxicologists in the country, and is also top-shelf with infectious diseases (he has been busy lately, traveling to meetings to and fro), and his honest personal belief is that is 100% avoidable with proper personal protection gear and smart cleanliness and awareness. I tend to follow along that line as well.

Since my new job now no longer has me in "warm's way" by supporting computers in General medicine and other areas that have sick students, I am now almost isolated somewhat, I plan on working and bringing in the needed payroll for quite awhile into an ebola outbreak. When I deem it necessary, I will begin doning protective gear as I interact with the student population, as will many others, I assume. there may come a time where I will need to work from home or take leave, not sure yet. I do not know how an epidemic will look like. How will our "Institute for Higher Learning" react? How will they protect their students and faculty? Lots of unknowns...

I do know that I think it is safe if protected and you keep your distance and keep your hands off stuff not within your "keep it clean" control.

I have a sudden need to store household goods... a lot..
building a room inside a barn.. (the barn behind the high rise console)

started off cleaning/sweeping/vacuuming/blowing dust, dirt, mouse turds
I came down with a coughing, sinus inflamed, sick feeling, chills real fast.
                      hindering my ability to work..
I just returned from the doctor's..

                      what if
I or someone else that was hacking in the two waiting rooms had ebola?
I keep hearing the sentence that "ebola is not airborne"
if I'd had it and sneezed big time (which I did) and the sneeze droplets got in the air my neighbor, was breathing, in the waiting room
would have been at risk in my opinion...

                      just my non professional opinion.

RR, You should be careful blowing out barns, garages or anyplace that has mouse turds (even high rise barns). Out west you can get Hanta virus from mouse feces/urine. You should use one of the respirators shown earlier in this thread.

Ditto what BG says. The Hantavirus is not something to play around with.

                            benn and patriot,
                            thank you...
I knew to take precautions around mouse poop. I just didn't know the right name.
and a job needed to get started right away... it wasn't time to frat around..
and I had a couple of cheap masks stashed. I just didn't take the time to go get them.

I googled the hanta.. sheet... the syptoms for beginning stage on the head... muscle groups sore as all get out..
I thought the soreness was because I'd been manhandling two man stuff by myself.. (and it probably partly was)

anyway taking the strong antibiotic the doc game me (do antibiotics work on viral stuff?) and another chem from the doctor plus everything in the vitamin box that said immune health, general well being, lots of C, liquids and let the job sit today... (lost a day cause I was dumb) oh yeah, I'm guessing you guys know what a netti pot is..

and a little prayer time (several times!)

anyhow, thanks for the heads up..
this isn't the PAW the stuff hasn't hit the fan yet.. making a stupid mistake now could end up bad.
after the shtf, could be real bad.

                            thanks again..
                            rr
(ps to all.... this is a good board to check in - on every few days ) even if you only rarely post. )

Ditto using the respirators on page 1 top for barn cleaning... That is exactly their purpose. They would have saved you from getting sick...

As for doctor's offices, if ebola is spreading and verified, I would 100% surely have at MINIMUM a face mask and wrap around glasses or goggles on... If ebola LOCAL, I will pass on doctors office if I can.
