I agree with your point. So many are "playing Boy Scout" with no idea that they may actually be required to depend on equipment or rely on a skill to get things done in a pinch.

Thanks for the chuckle first thing to start my day. Probably the reason I haven't bought a pack is because I know how sturdy the GI Ruck sack is and how it felt on my back after miles of marching. Then when they let us use the frames I thought I had died and gone to heaven...lol.
