Lowdown - not sure if this will help with the 1973 half dollar - but some interesting info. http://coins.about.com/library/US-co...lar-Values.htm

Gold coin in very fine condition runs 2-500+ there's two stampings for 1880. CC and S. The CC is ""uncirculated " is 1k+.
But collector pricing aside you'll need to know the exactly gold content for the metal value.

for purely value of metal in coin check out coinflation.com
an associate is steady buying coins at 95% of spot... price of silver...
my last coin purchases were over spot price of silver...
associate grins and says he is paying more than anyone in town!!
I offered him spot and he just grinned.

        edited to add.

the silver coins have a silver value at a fraction over 14 times face. (the term "14 times face value" comes to mind)
so i'll give you "spot" of 7.00 for the 1945 half dollar.
the kennedy, now, won't even buy you a coke! 5o cents
as a kid I paid 10 cents for a coke... so I guess inflation is over 500% since those long ago days.

the gold coin appears to have $309 worth of spot gold in it.
        i'll give you that.

as mentioned above... some of these coins have collector value based on rarity and prettiness etc..
I stay out of that category.
my associate will pay 95% of above values...
he has been part owner of two different pawn shops.
I've tried to sell coins at pawn shops before... they ARE offering a lot less than 95 %

I've read that the Chinese are sending some coins over that appear to be gold but aren't.
I don't have the ability to test coins.

These are from an older family member who got them from an older family member type deal.

I figured the gold coin was worth something but could tell just in size comparison not that much.

I know what you mean here. I've had some late 60's early 70's that sure sounded like silver. Even felt a bit like it as well. Then looked it up to be sure and like rr said...won't even buy a coke. Must be something in them to give that sound as it's happened to me more than a couple times.

From 65 yo 70 the half dollars were 40% silver. It was in '71 that they changed to no silver in them. I think it says the same thing on the link posted earlier.

apmex is a pretty good coin selling and usually will buy...
you can click and learn their coin selling price...
clicking on the 1000 coin bag then dividing price of the bag will give you a price per coin, if you buy in volume..

Yep. I've had a few of these. But I've had a few that sounded like silver but weren't even 40% according to coinflation.

I was scanning the forum and remembered the coin question...
so I checked silver prices and coinflation..
the half would have 6.90 in silver in it today!
I offered silver value of 7.00

hmm. I'd still pay the 7.00 but prices are dropping.
I've been asking what folks expect pm prices to do...
I'm getting answers all over the price range..

anyone care to make a projection of the silver low?
