I had my first MRE tonight, the roast beef with veggies, and it really wasn't bad. I'm thinking of ordering some, but need to know which are the best. I was thinking of just ordering the entree's, but most of the ones on-line don't come with heaters. Also, since I have to watch my carbs, one meal would last me a day if I ate it in parts. Any guidance out there? There was one place that offered cases of 24 or 72, but the case of 24 offered 4-6 varieties, and the case of 72 offered 6-8 different ones. Why don't they offer like two of each or something? I know there are more than 8 different varieties. Any of you military guys (I was in the Air Force, and never had to use field rats) chip in and tell me which ones to watch out for. Thanks.

From what lowdown3 was telling me when I asked about buying in bulk is to go with the Entree's only. If you go to wikipedia you can find the actual manufacturers names/site to get more detailed info. There are a lot more varieties than when I was in the Army (10+ years ago) so I cannot comment. I seem to recall hearing some manufacturer names of MRE's on one of the PAW videos about getting started with food storage. The other thing that i got from that video is that MRE's (from delta69's view) are better for vehicle/bob/patrol pack storage. Hope this helps."It's a trap!!!!" -- Admiral Ackbar

I will echo the advice about just getting the entrees. Also think about 'meals' you could eat cold, in case you are unable to heat them. If you are going to store them in a vehicle, try and prevent them from freezing.Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

I looked around on-line and found a bunch of places that was selling them for $75+ per case. I was in town today, and stopped by the local military surplus store, and they had them for $48 per case, or two for $90. I bought two, one of case A and one of case B, so I should have all the selections. The guy there told me they were from 2010, and did not contain the omelets. I was thinking at $4 per meal, I can't eat in a restaurant for that, and each meal contains enough food for at least two meals for me, if not three. I did ask the guy about keeping them in the trunk of the car, and he said they should be okay. I told him that I'd heard that excess heat really lowered the shelf life on them, and he said it could, but it would have to be really hot. He didn't say anything about freezing, but on the box it said not to handle them roughly if they were frozen, so I guess someone had considered that. I'm thinking I just made a small leap in my food storage here. <G> Hey, a couple of years ago we had a 20" snowfall, and the city shut down for several days. Then, there were several days after that in which I really didn't want to be out in it. (Too many idiots who had NO idea how to drive in the remains.) I should be good for a while now, with two 7 gallon water containers sitting full.
