  • how do you determine who to trust?

I have associates that as a group all have very close haircuts..
they would think a feller with long hair should never be trusted...
    --
another associate and his group are down on overweight folks.
a recent comment of "how could anyone trust any obese person?"
if they can't control their own weight they aren't trustworthy!"

on these two questions how do you stand...?

I've met a few folks on this board...
I would completely trust one of them who is overweight!

I know a well known survivalist leader who has long hair!

are there other physical characteristics that cause you to
immediately start determining whether to trust someone?

or mannerisms? or speech? or ??

someone with an addiction - be it alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, etc. is certainly less trusworthy. I tend to look closely at someone who seems overly preoccupied with money and material things to make sure they do not have the 'gimme' mentality that can develop.

      Maybe:
      1. do they walk the walk. Are they actively preparing, or just talking about what they're "gonna" do.
      2. are they rational? Do they keep talking about zombies as if they actually believe that's what's going to happen, or do they spend more time talking about the collapse of the economy, the possibility of a CME or EMP event?

      Maybe not:
      3. are they extremists? Are they constantly talking about how "those" people, (it doesn't matter which 'those' they're talking about) are ruining everything?
      4. they can tell you everything you never wanted to know about the inner workings of an AR-15 but couldn't build a loaf of bread if you held a gun on them.
      5. they don't own a water filter or can't describe three ways to make water safe to drink without one.

Anybody else? Chip in here, folks.

OK...trust is built up over time so I'm going to frame the responses as in a first meet...things that make me pause when I meet someone....POTENTIAL negative indicators:

        1) Body piercings. Lip/toungue piercings, ear guages, etc. One or two of these are common these days so they don't bother me as much, but people that overdo it make me wonder.

        2) Wierd hair colors. You know the pink/purple/blue. Again, makes me wonder.

        3) Hair. I don't really care if it's long or short or bald....is it clean. Now, if someone has obviously just come out of the barn working it's one story. If they're in a public setting, it's another. The same goes for general hygene.

        4) Excessive tatoos. Again, I'm not against tatoos, but excessive ones give me pause.

        5) Boistrous/loud voice that has to dominate the conversation no matter what the subject.

These are just a few examples at what kinds of characteristics make me pause before engaging. Again, these are not absolute as in I'd never associate with them, they just make me pause and think first.

I tend to put less emphasis on looks and appearance these days. One of most bad-A__(biblical beast of burden) fellows I know used to be pretty pudgy. Another used to sport a pretty disreputable beard.

Trust must be earned over time, and given only to the most worthy... Dare I "borrow" an Alphaism---Facta, non Verba...LOL

"Never judge a book by its cover" With that said its hard not to have preconcieved notions about someone based on their looks.

I try to get to know people before making up my mind. Especially since I look pretty shady myself.

I would also look for fruits of the spirit, self-control being a big one.

I got a couple of relatives that are over weight and don't do anything to try to change it. Do I trust them? I don't know, I know that I would not want to have them rely on me to feed them. I guess you could say I trust them to a point, where that point is I am trying to figure that out.

One of the most in shape LOOKING (definitely not fit though) guys I knew was one of the poorest performers when it came to anything physical. And boy could he complain! The best part was watching a tough 12 year old girl call him a sissy for not wanting to ruck! And she out rucked him!

                  Trust only comes over time.

Appearance is related to social engineering in that it often helps you get your foot in the door. For example- your a salesman and you have to call on some mechanics at Bob's Auto Repair and Fried Chicken (the oil from one part of the business is recycled to the other part of the business). How you dress, mannerisms and methods of speech SHOULD differ greatly than if you were calling on a corporate board of directors in a large corporation to pitch them a plan.

In short you kinda have to target the market. I've called on people when I was overdressed in khakis and a polo shirt. One place was a construction place. There was a big feeling of "we don't deal with people like you that drive around in air conditioning and use pens instead of hammers." LOL. So the guy does the "talk to me while I do this work" deal. I got the distinct impression I wasn't selling these guys anything that day. Then I remembered the lesson I am sharing now. I said "here, let me grab that." They were laying out a wall. I started pulling 2x4's and brought them over. "16 o.c?" I said. "You mark top and bottom plates for the studs now?" Yeah. I physically worked with them for about 5 minutes and showed them I was one of them also. I got more time than I would have and I got the sale. It was the first and only time I'm sure they had a sales person come dressed and then got sweaty helping them on a job. I know that story went around the crew and office staff cause I had the respect next time I was in there. They were customers for years.

Moral of the story, try to fit in. Doesn't mean you need to go get tats, let your facial hair grow into a rat's nest or anything like that. Just try to match yourself up, try to talk their language- within reason.

Those are environmental camoflage assets. G Gordon would probably get you through a roadblock, while Che' would be good to case a commune... I have a local sports jersey and a plain white t with a rainbow chickenfoot that I wear if indicated, although I have to complete the chickenfoot with patchouli...

I've seen Protus at these places...Just kidding...

When I see topics along these lines come up, I think about this article.

                            http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-harsh-...ter-person_p1/

…Come to the table with something…

On a little more serious note, ask them about a problem they have encountered and how they solved it. If they come along a lot of problems but don’t do the actual problem resolution (with them doing the actual work), then they haven’t been in the “$h!t”.

Most of us have had a flat tire on the car we needed to drive “right now”. Ask them how they resolved the flat tire issue and them ask them how to fix the flat tire issue without a spare. If their answer is “Wait on triple A”, then might want to look elsewhere.

Gotta balance the “nice guy” that can’t do jack **** but won’t steal you blind and the jack of all trades and master of ripping you off. Need to keep your eye open for the trifecta of: Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (and slip in Attitude) that you need to get through a situation. What is the person’s goal, if you can get a handle on that, then you will have a lot of insight. For any given situation, anyone can bull**** their way through one or two areas of capabilities, but demonstrating all of them, shows the person is the full package and not a waste of space.
