  • Changing Municipal Code for Chickens

I heard a really good podcast interview with the author of "City Chicks" on the permacutlurevoices podcast. The lady talked about different breeds and styles of pens but the best part was how she and others helped cities change their code to allow chickens. The quote in red is excellent.

    Model City Chicks Code

[CENTER][COLOR=#ff0000][B]"The fact that zoning in towns allows residents to raise a barking, crapping dog the size of a small elephant,
but not four hens for a steady, fresh egg supply,
shows just how lacking in common sense we have become as a society."

Two years ago I spoke at a city planning board meeting in support of city chickens. The zoning board was considering allowing them but using setback distances to keep it to only homeowners with large lots, essentially keeping them illegal.

That is exactly what one of the rules has 150' from another residence...which is why I like the quote...it points out the idiocy of a setback.

Just found out a couple days ago from the neighbor that lives behind me, that I had been misinformed about our town not allowing chickens inside the towns limits.
Seems that you are allowed 4-5 hens and a rooster, and the only condition is that you have to have your chicken coup inspected by a city inspector.

Needless to say this got a big WOO HOO from me!

Well thats great news...time to chicken up!!

Its best to check the code for yourself these days too many people think they know and have never read the code.
