  • Went to the doctor last week....

I had my yearly checkup last week. During the course of the exam, he aske me the usual questions about any changes in health and on and on. The last question he aske me is "Do you have any guns in your house?" I looked at him like he was from Mars and he repeated the question. I asked him "What does that have to do with my yearly checkup?" He said it was a health issue and wanted to insure that I was being safe if I had guns in the house. I asked him if he had any gun safety training. He said no. I asked him how, without gun safety training, would he know if my guns posed a health issue. He couldn't answer the question. I told him to ask again when he was as certified on guns as he was as a medical doctor. He didn't like my answer.

The basic take-away from this is they're attacking our Second Amendment rights from every angle they can think of. A medical doctor has no legitimate vested interest as to whether or not there are firearms in my home...period!

I read a story similar to this a while back... Guy went for a yearly checkup, Doc asked a bunch of questions, including the "Gun Question". Then the guy asks the doc for a sleeping pill scrip cause he's having trouble sleeping and it's causing him trouble at work - can't stay focused because he's tired.

Next thing ya know, the cops are at his door, demanding he turns over his guns, because he's been deemed to have a mental disorder!!

Folks get annoyed by this...while not right...just pull out your phone...paper /pen etc. Then ask the doctor questions.
      Do you drink?
do or have you used dope /illegal drugs
Have you or do you own /watch pornographic material?
      are you lgbt?

Then when they get upset jet say your making sure they don't have lifestyle issues that would prevent them from being your physician.
Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

I've heard of this happening before, but jc is the first person I've ever met who then got the gun question...
usually following the story there are many examples of ways to slam the doctor... jc didn't slam the doc.

        let me propose an alternative...
someone (Obama's minions) have told the doctors/nurses to ask these questions...
just another example that our gov't wants to take away your guns.
and you know why... it's just hard to believe it...
        anyhow..
let's think up ways to politely get out of the situation and not alarm the doctor...
if he gets alarmed or embarrassed or on alert or shamed.... why not notate his records that this patient
may have guns and be dangerous...
patient walks out door glad that he slammed the doctor,,, but doc gets the last quiet laugh knowing that
he's sicked the alphabet guys on patient!!

I don't have an answer to my own question...
what about it guys.. what are half truths that can be used as answers? answers that
would defuse things and allow doc to go ahead with his treatment/test/exam?

"I have a bb gun does that count?"
        or
I have an old non functioning shotgun that is a family heirloom.
        or
just "no danger here doctor." with a friendly polite smile.

anybody here familiar with the form? will my answer that yes I have bb gun get me a "YES" check mark?
in that case. that would be a bad answer...

I didn't slam the doctor but was careful to be very polite in my responses. I let him know that he was a medical professional and not a firearms expert. During our discussion I pointed out the medical certificates on his wall (as most doc's have) and the absence of any firearms certificates. I think the key in any situation like this is to react in a kind, disarming manner but be confident in your approach.

I don't know what he checked on his form, but no alphabet soup visits (yet).

I also informed my wife of the situation and advised her on how I'd like her to handle it. I trust she'll be as diplomatic as paractical.

            jc,
the doctor would probably charge you for copies of your "records" from this visit..
your insurance company may have them as part of paying the bill.
and may send them to you... so that you can keep track of your ?? condition or some other reason.
it would be interesting for you to obtain a copy of the records and see what he put!

I've told my family to just say "No", if asked this question by a doctor. I think if I said "It's none of your business", he would likely check "Yes" on his form.
I have to wonder - is it illegal to lie to your doctor? Obviously, if you're answering questions about a medical condition, it's probably best to give the doc accurate answers, so he/she can give you the best treatment. But I REALLY don't consider gun ownership a medical condition!!

And if it somehow came out later that the doctor found out I own guns, I'd just say the same thing our politicians say... "Oh, I'm sorry.. at the time, I couldn't recall...)

Being in the medical business, I can tell you that all of us will be asking more and more questions of our patients. Our office chose not to ask these questions this year and we paid a fine of close to $15K. Next year the fine goes to six figures from what I've been told so we may have to comply. We are a specialist, and we will have to be asking the same questions as a PCP. Everyone that sees Medicare patients HAVE to comply or we will not be paid, that's how they also got the offices to go to EMRs. Arm twisting. As far as answering, you'll have to decide what you want to do. But, I would be very careful what you say and how you say things. I would bet that jc has a yes down on his chart. Since I'm a 2A fan, I will have to tell my PCP, when he asks me, nope...not anymore! I hate lying, and hope that God will forgive me, but I truly feel that will come back to haunt us at some time. These records are being made electronic for a reason. They will be sent places at some point in time that you may not want them to go. Is this a back door registration? Maybe! Insurance companies are in bed with Obummercare. Maybe the info isn't going places yet, but it could be at any moment.

Also, there are billing codes called ICD-9 that we are currently using. I cannot remember the exact number of codes there are, but it's around 14,000 iirc. The goberment wants to implement the ICD-10 codes which increase the codes to about 68,000. There is a reason they want more detailed billing codes....just my two cents.

Despite how a few of them act, they aren't God.

Folks, increasingly it's going to be more and more important to start to withdraw yourself from the system.

If your of the type that feels like you just "have" to go see a doc every 2.4 seconds for every sneeze, sniffle, etc. your going to get further and further sucked in and further and further intruded on. We can AND SHOULD deal with many things on our own. We are SURVIVALISTS after all right?

Now obviously I'm not talking about cancer, open fractures, major diseases, etc. but a lot of COMMON THINGS we need to start dealing with ourselves. Saving money in the process, building confidence in our own skills, learning new ones and avoiding a lot of the gubmint BS.

"No, I'm a pacifist..." usually suffices... Lefties love that one... I am not there to "win over the nurse or doctor." I am there for medical needs I cannot do myself, or require insurance payment for. Play the game...

As for lying... Did the spies sent ~secretly~ into Jericho by Joshua tell those who asked that they were Hebrew spies? Did Moses lie when he told Pharaoh that the Hebrews would go into the wilderness to worship YHWH on a THREE DAYS journey?

Your doctor has no authority to force you to answer anything... He is not a sworn LEO or judge. It is none of his business. that is my take on it...

When the Obummercare was passed, I was blasted as a conspiracy nut when I started to say what I thought would happen. Needless to say, many things I spoke about are coming true. Many others are to come post November elections as things were "postponed" by our leader. I am seeing generic meds that are cheap needing pre-authorizations, many meds prices increased (look at doxycycline up about 2000%), procedures that I used to do at an office visit now requires an authorization which we cannot get on same day, so the patient needs to come back another day for procedure which requires an additional copayment. "Sorry sir, but your insurance requires an authorization for draining that abcess, so I'll call in an antibiotic and you can come back in a week. No, we don't prescribe pain meds for that. No, it's not our standard operating procedure, in fact, it's your new government insurance that is requiring it so you'll have to take it up with them." That was a conversation I had this week. Patient wasn't happy....but knew it was out of our control. He changed his insurance to Obummercare from private insurance. He wasn't happy about that either. Oh well!! He got what he elected.
