I'll tell you what, our little Chihuahua Terrier mix is the best damn watch dog we've ever had. Being so small he seems to be much more alert and attentive to his surroundings by necessity. As for being a guard dog, well, he has “the muscle”, being our currently five month old, 100 lbs, 29 inches to shoulder, dopy brindle Great Dane. Being brindle that dog blends into almost any backdrop.
"but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved... even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children." - Matthew 24: 13; Isaiah 49: 6

Trip wires would be nice, but if you live in a region filled with wildlife... how many times will you reset them? And a trip wire doesn't hear the guy who walked over or under it. Multiple levels of early warning devices is of course the best route.

"tripwires"
hmm. i need to ask around and find someone that knows about those things.
maybe they'll come to the florida campout and give a little demo...
thanks Christian...
battery powered infrared sensors as used on game trail cameras are good too. they don't HAVE to be wired to cameras...

Some of the game trail cameras will e-mail the pics real time to your phone or e-mail. It's good to see a zombie and know what they look like before eradication efforts:)

Exactly why if you do intend on disarming an unknown tripwire for one reason or another, you always follow it to its "Source".

motion sensors have uses besides taking pictures. their sensitivity can be adjusted so they only detect large animals. they could be mounted on posts facing outward from your house but inside the fence and wired to a board inside with a map of your place. when one went off it could sound a buzzer and light an LED on the map to not only tell you someone was there, but give their location.
