I keep change of all types. In really tight times we roll it and bring it to the bank, usually it just sits in mason jars or larger container.
My brother was helping me with some wiring in a room one day. I had a 5 gallon bucket full of change, he starts to kick/slide it with his foot- "oooh!" He realized it was full of change.
I said "be careful of my retirement funds there!" ;) LOL
On a survival side note there is a couple of reasons, but these DO NOT really bear on why I keep change personally-
1. In a currency swap type scenario, the metal coinage would probably remain unchanged.
2. Honestly, I could see common people using normal coins for currency/trade over gold and silver for one main reason- AVAILABILITY. Everyone out there has some change even if it's floating around in the floorboards of their car. Hence, everyone (Joe Sixpack and Suzy Q. SoccorMom) can play.
Remember in the long long ago, what was used for currency in that area had a lot to do with what was AVAILABLE. Seashells might have been used near the sea shore but they damn sure weren't used in IOWA. Corn maybe, sea shells no.
How much gold and silver does Joe Sixpack and Suzy Q. SoccorMom have in their possession? I'm guessing between zero and nil. How much loose change do they have? Or can they find.
Also, for the "stuff's getting better" crowd- some will want to hedge their bets and get "some cash" (in their minds) for goods they sell/trade versus just barter wampum. In other words, some people will think that yeah this situation sucks now, but everything will be back to normal soon. Hence the four dollars in normal dimes and quarters I receive now for something will likely still be worth a couple of dollars after things "are back to normal." Again, remember- WE understand PM's, the average dumbbutt on the street DOES NOT. I've proved this with the pre 65 quarters and dimes deal in asking hundreds of people (young and old, black, white and brown, stupid and smart, rich and poor, city and country) if they knew they had some silver in them. None did.
And my friends THOSE are the people you will be doing any trading or commerce with in the PAW. If you happen to run into another like minded person- YOU WILL KNOW IT, and a whole nuther set of rules/barter goods will apply.
Just some wild theories of mine on this....www.homesteadingandsurvival.com

You've hit upon my silver buying program.
I put all my change in a 5 gallon glass jug and when I decide I have enough or silver drops a bit I take my change to the bank and cash it in. Then I drive to my local coin shop and buy junk silver.
I know it doesn't sound like much but last time it was a little over $300. Multiply that by 30 years and it starts to add up. When I first started silver was in the $6 an ounce range.
