a couple of questions that have come to mind....
1. why is all my wood cut too short?
2. a senior lady asked me if I was "covering my fire"
I told her I didn't know what she meant...
she was disappointed that I didn't know.
what does the phrase mean?
answers...
1. as a kid our fireplace was small... only a small (short) log would fit..
I had to cut a lot of firewood... when I set the saw down, it just automatically falls at "too short" for current fireplace.
2. when senior lady was growing up, the next to last person leaving the room, would look back and remind the one left "don't forget to cover the fire."
dump the remaining wood into coals and add a new piece of wood.
then cover all with with a healthy layer of ashes. .
in the morning, you can brush back the ashes and find a hot piece of wood/coals under the ashes, you will be way ahead on the fire the following morning
