Who wants to see a thread on how cold effects my ability to conduct common tasks. I'm in Idaho and it's COLD, 19 deg so now might be a good time to document how cold can mess with our mark 1 tools ie your hands. I have been very cold before so I know what to expect. If you have never been seriously cold and experienced just how difficult it is to do common tasks this may prove to be either entertaining or educational. Perhaps both. I'm on the road so final posting will have to wait two weeks but I'm willing to take requests and post videos and pics. Ie want to see me try to manipulate buttons or use a cig lighter how about build a fire using a magnesium and flint??

Well today was the day. We recently had a warm front move through with temps jumping up to 30 deg so I had to postpone the fun a few days. Outside temp was 16 deg with low wind. The video did not come out exactly as I planned mostly because I did not plan accordingly. Regardless, the end result was the same. I froze my butt off. For anyone who has never been seriously cold I want to make a couple points about how it effects your body. First and foremost it makes using your hands difficult. Dexterity, strength and sensation of touch are all impacted. Aside from just feeling cold Pain on the surface of the skin Is the first sensation that you will experience. After a while the pain subsides and is replaced by dull throbbing and weakness in the hands. This is followed by a loss of dexterity. Having been VERY cold before I knew that loss of fine motor skills was to be expected but what I really wanted to try to document was what happens after that. The uncontrollable shivers that severely impact motor skills. I simply couldn't hold out that long, I am getting older and the cold is just harder to deal with than it was 20 years ago. I can tell you that if you ever find yourself in a survival situation where you are exposed to extreme cold get to work on shelter and fire BEFORE you start to feel loss of strength in your hands. If you don't you will find it very difficult to carry out the tasks needed for survival. The time from noticeable dexterity loss in your hands and complete loss of fine motor skills is VERY short, you don not have much time.

One deer season I went toe to toe with a kid in our group that set out all day. At about 10 am the wind picked up out of the north an I think the temp dropped. Well around 2 pm I was going hyperthermic an was shaking bad, I got unstupid at this time thank god because my thinking was getting sluggish as well as my body, it was a ruff walk back to the house ,I let it go to fare but got in an hit the covers to get warm. If it had been miles back to the house I might not had a pleasent out come.

I guess those of us that live in areas that routinely get freezing temps already know, or should know how the cold saps your dexterity and feeling from your fingers. I for one have experienced the debilitating effects and I gotta tell you it's no fun. I do however think that practicing being able to do things like start a fire in this condition is a very good skill set to have though.
