  • a time of great respect and honor for a great weapons engineer.

Mikhail Kalashnikov, designer of the eponymous Kalashnikov assault rifle, is in an Izhevsk hospital with undisclosed health problems. The 94-year-old engineer has been hospitalized at least three times in the last year and spent most of the brief Russian summer in a Moscow clinic before being released in August . . .

mighty good video honoring the man, but also educational for me.

I took some good photos of a ak at the last gun show. I was going to post them in the ak vs ar thread. Wish I could post photos from my phone. It would be a good nod to the man.

        just,
I'd sure appreciate seeing the pix. that video helped me some. some stills would be great... I started to initiate another thread in the armory about Mikhail, but figured the ak vs ar was appropriate spot.

Took these in Reno Nevada. I asked the guy how long it had been outside his responded that it had been "lost" over the winter then just had the "bad" rust knocked off.. He claimed it still worked. Consider this a gift to all you AK lovers.. ;)

hard for me to generate any sympathy for a commie that not only built such a weapon, but that plagiarized the basic design in the process. Hugo Schmeisser really was the design genius, not Kalashnikov.

Post WWII, the Germans had no facilities in Germany, or the ability to do weapons work. German named Vorgmiller or something like that, went to Spain, and developed your beloved 91, from the ideas of other German engineers.
There have been very few original ideas when it comes to firearms design. Most everything was invented just before, or just after, 1900.
Kalasnikov even admits that the AK was not his design.
