  • Coming soon....new addition to the family

My wife and I are expecting a baby boy at the end of February. This will be our first child. I would really like some insights on prepping with kids, particularly young ones.

I will be converting the man cave into the "little man cave". I did some research online and found some Realtree camouflage bedding for cribs, a "hunting cabin" motiff for the baby's room, AND toy stuffed animal heads. The best part is.... the wife loves it!!!

Anyways, any advice, nuggets of wisdom, techniques for additional food storage would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats on the new addition! Unfortunately I can offer no words of wisdom regarding prepping with children as I have none and anything I said would be at best, pure conjecture.

      Congrats!

On the prepping with kids question- folks tend to focus on the wrong things- teaching them to shoot at 5 when they have been brought up with no responsibility and are semi out of control and don't listen.

Better time spent putting your effort into teaching them to always do the right thing, to always listen the first time, have games where everyone stays quiet for an extended period of time, keep a quiet home, get them physically active and keep them that way, watch what they eat, don't give into every indulgence be it food, toys, etc.

They CAN be taught to not act crazy and run around like chickens with their heads cut off, they CAN learn to sit quietly and play by themselves while you are doing something else, they CAN learn to listen to you the first time without any ridiculously "counting" and what not.

If you teach them right from the beginning, don't give in to stupid crap CONSISTENTLY, they will learn what's expected of them. I've watched people spank their kids more in a day than we have in 13 years. Let them know what's expected of them. Kids will want to please you by acting right, they just have to be taught what's expected.

"Crisis parenting" should have no place with a serious survivalist family.

Like Scripture says "train up a child in the way he would go, and when he is old he won't depart from it."

It doesn't say "beat up" or "threaten and count up", it doesn't say "deal with when you have to". "Train up" denotes a responsibility of the parents.

When you consider that your family will either be your BIGGEST ASSET or your BIGGEST LIABILITY when the time comes, let alone for daily life, well then you understand the significance of training up a child.

The teaching them how to shoot, how to survive, etc. comes EASY after their heart is right, just like with adults....

Diaper bags -any bag will work.make sure you have 1-3 spare onezys? ...etc.you'll go through them.

Bike tired jogging stroller.- awesome off road...camping etc. But in town it sucks. Those big swivel wheel strollers. Suck...get the jogger for outdoors and a cheapo folder for in town.pony up for a jogger with sun shade and reclining seat...add some bug netting...instant crib /bed.

Get all the sleep you can now....LOL..and be calm..listen...enjoy.
They grow up fast.....to fast......and on a side note....they are like sponges ....it can be comical but not always.LOL
Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

Consider cloth diapers. As long as you have a way to clean them, you never run out. If your wife can nurse your son, it makes life a lot easier. No formula - no recalls. No heating bottles and no traveling with a bunch of formula. If your baby is hungry, you feed him. You don't have to get out bottles and heat water and mix the stuff. It is on tap and at the perfect temperature.

Remember, jarred baby food is a relatively new invention. We never used much of it.

This is golden. My wife and I hear it all the time, 'your kids are so well behaved and polite. How do you do it?' I politely say, 'just be consistent.' I cant slap them like I want to and say, ' if you'd stop being a pushover idiot who was more concerned about who's on dancing with the idiots or which NFL team is playing who all day Sunday you could probly have kids that acted like these if you worked at it and gave two s****.' WHEW! Sorry, vented a little.

As for 'prepping', I suggest making sure you not only buy the clothes they're in now, but the clothes they'll BE in later. We're pulling clothes out of storage now that we bought several years ago. Just plan it like everything else. Make sure you make time for them to be kids too. Try not to overwhelm them with too much 'doom and gloom'. Good luck and congrats!!

Awesome advice! You folks have given me a lot to think about. This why I love this group! I will keep everyone posted about the due date and the baby's progress.

Congrats!! Enjoy and take lots of pics/vid of them and be sure to have pics of you with them, that is important more than what people think.

                ********************

I got a 5 yo boy and a 4 yo girl. It isn't easy, its worth it, consistency is harder than what you think, your tired from working and doing the quick/easy happens before you know it (got any tips on how to stay consistent when you are tired?).

I am struggling to get my kids to listen to me the first time I tell them to do something so if you have tips or training examples (specific stuff no generalities please) I would appreciate it.

We had our first run in with a teacher saying our son has ADHD, personally I think expecting a 5 yo boy to sit perfectly still in class for 6 hours is unrealistic, not to mention that it is so hard to diagnose and the fact that he is 5.

On a good note my son does know that if I promise him something he can count on it...I just make sure I don't promise him something I can't keep. We read the bible with them and pray with them, my son is very compassionate in praying for people with injuries.

From teacher friends we know and kids we have worked with in a para church type ministry and in MA activities I can tell you most kids DON'T have ADD. I think it's a bogus diagnosis from teachers who think their job will be easier with a classroom of zombies versus children.

Hell yes to have ANYONE sit still for 6 hours, kids are no different. Teachers (ok some teachers) are just lazy now a days. Couple that with the "public school mentality" as my wife calls it- "Oh Joe joe got offended at having to do his homework, let's cause a big bunch of crap for the teacher, form and committee and discuss this at length." Silly example but we know of goofy parents that did similar things to teachers and admin staff of schools, including requiring "special lighting". Ironic that we dealt with the same kid for a year and he figured out really quick we weren't going to play his games- no "special lighting" needed. He would tell us repeatedly how he had a "learning disability" and both the wife and I would tell him that was incorrect. Kids got enough going against them now without hearing that they have a "learning disability" just because they are kids. That kind of stuff really pisses me off!

If I had to guess, I'd say probably 40% or more of kids in publix skewl system are or probably have been told to be medicated by the teachers.

What peeved my wife off about it was that they immediately went to the pill as the solution without even suggesting or considering any other type of intervention...We so want a nanny cam in the classroom. Same teacher told my cousin's daughter that she had lice...cousin took daughter to have her checked for lice...guess what no lice...it was shampoo build up.

Teachers are not medical professionals and should stop acting like one.

Few things as "touchy" as discussing parenting. The bad behaviors are relatively common so it's easy for someone to get all pissy thinking it is directed at them. It's like when the preacher is talking about this particular sin and it seems like he directed the whole damn thing at you LOL.

Just do the same thing each and every time, we only spank for disobedience, not stupid stuff like spilling milk or normal kids stuff. You say this and people that have never experienced your child think "they must order the poor kid around." Not at all. But the family structure needs to be maintained.

In Isaiah there is a passage about "as for my people, women rule over them and children are their oppressors." Probably not verbatim but you get the point. This is where the average American "male" is at this point in time. Why? Because of ourselves.

Family leadership equals responsibility. Most shun it to sit on the couch and drink beer and watch TV. Then (like everyone else) they go to work and complain about their spouse and there kids. Hell I love my spouse and children!!!!

As to specifics, once they now your for real, a "look" goes a long way. And honestly for what we are doing, I think we should teach our kids to try to watch for subtle things like this a lot.

And I've never claimed my family is without problems, nor do I think we will ever be problem free. But we love each other and have a functioning family structure. We also do a lot together, not always going in sixteen different directions.

                        Congrats Tackleberry!

One of my fav baby purchases of all time was a back pack for a baby to ride in. It allowed me carry the baby while getting things done around the house. The babies loved it too. When they were irritable I'd strap them in and take them for a walk. In 5 minutes they are purring like kittens.

Everything else we bought or were given for babies I've told my wife to sell, because after the last one I'm done with that madness. Except for the backpack. I'll keep that around for the grandkids.

I completely agree with you about the consistency and the ADHD crap.... If I were a kid now the feds from US Dept of Education would be demanding that my parents put me on a max dose of Ritalin when all I really needed back then, as I do now, is to be let loose to run off the energy. I sit in a cubicle all day so to keep from bouncing off the walls (and prior to blowing out my Achilles tendon in August) I head to the gym for lunch to work out. The gym is within in walking distance of my office so I am able to get a 45 min workout each day.

I do have experience with 8-12 y/o kids from coaching Little League for 5 years but providing, planning, and caring for kids..... that's a whole other ballgame.

Definitely gave me things to think about....thanks!
