A cash driven medical practice needs a doctor, a nurse and a secretary / receptionist. A medical practice that takes insurance needs The Doctor, a nurse, a receptionist, an insurance specialist, a negotiator and a 3 person accounts payable department.

My Chiropractor stopped accepting insurance and became a cash only business a couple years ago. He said that business has increased since then.

This is exactly why taking your dog to the vet is 100 times cheaper than seeing a doctor for the same thing. They don't have to pay a team of people to negotiate the insurance.

just don't buy your flea tick medication from our vet....he over charges...6 units from him cost $120...6 units filled by local pharmacy $40. We no longer get our meds from our vet.

Great story 1Admin thanks for sharing.

that is where most vets make their money. Prescriptions. And medical tests.
Out here in our area there is a mobile vet that comes to the feed store on Saturday morning. Just him and his truck and medicines. Low overhead = low prices.

I know the vet I worked for was willing to price match when he could. A lot of times he couldn't compete with corporations who were able to get huge bulk discounts. Pet Smart sold the Science Diet cat food for less than his cost. He was also willing to negotiate large purchases. If someone was going to buy a years supply of something, he could work with them.

Another way to save on Frontline is to buy the largest size (assuming you don't have the largest size dog) and put it in a small glass container (I use a blood tube), the draw it out with a 1ml syringe to get the correct amount for your dog's size. I think a tiny dog is 0.5ml - of course you would need to check that for yourself. As always, I am not a vet. I do not play one on TV. Nor did I sleep at a Holiday Inn last night. :D

Great idea!! My wife is a nurse so I think she could do what you are suggesting....doesn't mean she will.
