if the roads are full of vehicles, it won't matter that you have "slime" in your tires. You still can't get thru. Why not just have stuff cached near your local water source? Done carefully, at night, nobody will know it's there. It's far more practical to mountain bike 10-15 miles, at night, than drive several hundred miles with a 4 wheeled vehicle. If shtf, plenty will be willing and able to shoot up your vehicle. Odds are very high that a loved one will be hit.

Im assuming.... but does your post indicates that you feel it is much wiser to stay put after a major event then to try to leave urban areas?? I assume you are referring to built up urban areas because you reference the roads being filled with abandoned vehicles. Is this correct?

There are threads on runflats, airless tires and other methods. Foot travel is much easier to defend than bicycle though slower and doesn't require pathed routes to move quietly. There are many options for sure

Caches that are "several hundred miles" as you say would only be used to continue a journey outside of an area most likely. They would consist of things like fuel, money, food and resupply ammo. They would be things that got used or got left behind in a hurry and would assist in continuing towards a safety inclined goal.
Which is kinda what you suggested anyway

There are different types of caches. Local on scene for additional supplies that might not be found or lost to predators, weather etc. Medium Range which is kinda what you describe, something that would be off scene in case you lose the place or need to leave for safety reasons and Long Range which could be to continue the journey or re-establish a new location all together possibly. There are additional reasons for them to be spread out as well.

I would hate to think my "local" water source was 15 miles away too.

15 miiles is about the max you'd want to have to do in one night, off road for most of it, pushing/riding a bike. and very few people have to go that far, actually to find woods/water. People figure on driving to BOL aint GOT any caches, man. they "think" that they can put their needs in an SUV. :-)

I have learned a few things about our little community. Probably the one that eludes people the most is this... Even though our community is FULL of blow hards, big talkers and hobbyists there are a few who are actually VERY serious about what they do.. They have caches, they train, they war game, they run scenarios. Its dangerous to assume that EVERY idiot in the community thinks he can just load up his SUV and head for the hills.. Yep there are some of those running around and there are some guys who have a couple storage facilities rented in rural or sub urban locations along their planned route and caches burried along back up/ secondary routes and layover sites scouted.. My point is,, not everybody who is living in a city and has a plan to "bug out" is a unprepared idiot. Sure they are still in the city and thats not ideal but that doesnt mean they are just going to be fodder for the zombies either..

yeah, about 1%, just like 1% of bugs aint killed by spraying them with Raid. LUCK, in other words. 100 to 1 that I am correct is GREAT odds, pard. :-) I doubt that they will even get HOME if they are working when shtf, much less get out of dodge in time. Just the fact that they are trying to go far enough to think that a 4 wheeled vehicle is needed is bad enough, and then to think that they can get it thru all the messes of cars is even worse. anybody who really thinks s is going to htf is living at the edge of town, or in a small town, or knows enough to use 2 wheels or shanks's mare to GOOD.. every body else is just kidding themselves.
