I am in the process of moving into a new place. During the unpacking and shuffling around phase of getting settled into the new place, we are leaving the trash cans in the driveway up against the garage door. By the garage door and the trashcans is our outside redwood table, we haven

On the other hand, he could wait until you've settled-in, made friends in the neighborhood, and got to know him a little better - just to find out that you really did "chuck it"...
It sounds like he did not actually consider it to be fair game, since you observed the table, still supporting the note.
In our current disposable society, a lot of people throw away perfectly good "stuff". Not only could he have prevented it from going to waste, but he could have saved you the time and hassle of disposal.
What a crappy neighbor!

ETA: I do agree on the security aspect, I just don't think we need to condemn every "recycler" for "coveting his neighbor's stuff."Last edited by Gonzo; 10-06-2013, 05:02 AM.

I live in a rather out of the way neighborhood, limited access and no reason to come back in here. We never used to see strangers cruising the area but for the last year or so, every trash day, the scrappers are cruising the neighborhood looking for recyclables. In one respect it saves me from having to haul it off myself, but I don't like the idea of having these guys cruising the area to see what can be made off with.

Scrappers were some of the first folks stopped for traffic violations back when I was working the highways. ALWAYS had warrants, often had stolen 'stuff' and various contraband. I hate to paint all with the same brush, but it was more than a 80% of them. Others who I learned over the years were 'relaxed' about obeying any laws included carnies, roofers, and driveway sealers. It never hurts to keep your eyes open and maintain opsec just in case that stranger walking slowly down the sidewalk talking on a cell phone on a cold day is NOT casing the neighborhood. I admit it...26 yrs as LEO did make me suspicious of just about everyone.

It was nothing a few years ago to see trucks piled 10 feet high with any and all menageries of scrap teetering driving down the road. I swear 50% of the metal like this has already went to China.Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"
Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"
Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

On the surface, it is just a person asking a question of "if it is trash, give me a call and I will haul it". But the more I think about it, the more I don't like it.
What if this is the modern day "newspapers in the driveway means no one is home", probe. The way how I see it, if the note was still on the table in a couple of days; game on for the break-in.
It just felt like someone was casing the place. More than likely I am over thinking and and overreacting on this.
I will never forget a conversation I had with a guy. I was at a gas station, getting gas, and the guy at the pump next to me saw I had a CB in the car. He stated, "Yea, I had a Cobra 19 once, until someone else decided they wanted more that I did. Broke the window and it cost me a radio, window and a wet butt from sitting in the rain soaked seat on the way home."
It just always feels like there is two people looking at your stuff; you and the people debating if they want it more than you do.

we live a little off the regular path.
we moved here 2 years ago.
we are getting the "we want to come see you, and see where you live" from new associates and old.
some are sincere folks that care about us. some are just durned nosey. some are thieves. some are only thieves if they get in financial distress.
my young bride and I are practicing some responses.
"well, I hear you are the chairman of the garden club. we'd sure like to see your daylilies."'
"well, when you come through town, call us, we are traveling some. we'd want to be there to show you around. call before you come!"
"well, so you want to come Christmas. that would be great, we will be including our mother. so we will probably be at her house." (this was an exact recent quote to a relative.... makes me wonder why the relative wouldn't want to be at mom's!!)
"well, let us know so we can put up the dog. (or leave the gate open and we don't even have a gate)"
