  • September is Preparedness Month

Preaching to the choir? maybe, maybe not
There are new folks and lurkers that might be looking for things a little less deep than some of our discussions

Start small, eat the steak one bite at a time as this is a adventurous journey not a race, prioritize, work hard, train, ask questions, listen, make educated decisions, test yourself, your people and your gear, be aware of your surroundings, stay focused and smile because with each step you bettered yourself to some degree

    Some .Gov Resources:

Information on how to stay safe during public health emergencies.

S&Pers add some things in here that might help the new folks or someone just getting started during this national preparedness month.

don't buy into time lines and fear mongering.. Yes there are several things right now that cause concern, That's why we prepare. If you are a beginner Adding to your supplies a little bit every time you go to the store for the next six months is better than running out and buying tons of stuff now because some survival guru told you the world is gonna end by mid 2014.. Slow and easy wins the race..

Anytime I meet or talk to someone new and they want to become one of the cool club, I start them off with this link:

This series will help each of you begin creating a preparedness foundation that you and your family can rely on when unexpected situations present themselves.

The links to the right hand side of the page.

As MIO said, one bite of the steak at a time.

Or you can go plums to the wall and spend your life savings on preps like the Jones do.

Also, Mountain House is having hella sales this month through various vendors.
You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

Most states have their own preparedness sites
I will put some on a few states but be sure and look for yours with your googlefu

Look at the main categories of survival and don't get stuck being too gun heavy

          Food, Water, Shelter, Security, Medical

Focus on one for a time period then the next IE: Buy extra canned goods that are "on sale" this week, get a water filter next paycheck sold right here on the JRH link http://www.jrhenterprises.com/Water-Filters_c8.htm , next time you drive by the local gun store you get one box of ammo to put back and one to take the family out with next month for the family firearm familiarization (fun) and sign up for the next CPR course offered http://www.redcross.org/take-a-class and so forth
By the next time you look you will be accomplished and on track because you trained, your family trained, you stocked, stored and geared and are now more prepared which was/is the original focus.
You start there and work forward with increased intensity IE: instead of 2 boxes of ammo you go to an actual firearms training course like the CCW, then a local taught level 1 class at a gunrange then move into a advanced course, then to a combat training course and then to a force on force and so forth.
With medicine it might be the red cross cpr course, then a local herbalist, then maybe get with SAR folks to take an outdoor trail medicine course, maybe a tactical medicine course if you qualify jobwise then move to a survival medicine course and so forth

My 2 cents worth is don't get discouraged, if after while you can't see much progress. Keep plugging away. Set measurable goals like I get 6 months of food, then 1 year etc. It takes time.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

              31 Days to Survival Guide

This is a survival prep guide I came across. It's helps to create an outline/plan of what to do if you're a beginner.

              31 Day to Survival.pdf
"One cannot but ponder the question: what if the Arabs had been Christians? To me it seems certain that the fatalistic teachings of Mohammed and the utter degradation of women is the outstanding cause for the arrested development of the Arab. He is exactly what he was around the year 700, while we have kept on developing. Here, I think, is a text for some eloquent sermon on the virtues of Christianity." - General George S. Patton, diary, June 9, 1943.
