  • Casualty Rates

From time to time questions and posts arise about guns and ammo and amounts, reloading, body armor, old time weapons that require very little to make etc. The main topic is battle survival.
There are alot of posts related to this matter and I will touch on them some

My question to you is what is your casualty rate going to be if you engage in battle? Who will it most likely be? Who are you going to lose and how is it going to effect you? You do realize that you will lose some family every time you do battle don't you?

Having got that gray matter thinking now is the time to start thinking about NOT getting into the battle to begin with.
Location was discussed in a podcast recently which is of the utmost importance. It is a given fact that the less populated the better however it doesn't mean you won't be effected. The more populated the greater the risk of contact with unfriendly therefore the higher the casualty rate. Those "neighborhoods" are also fire risks some of which will be inadvertently or intentionally set during firefights. The firefighters wont be there to save your preps or people in the HOA once it kicks off. Some country people are no better off surrounded by knee high dry kindling, underbrush or falling torches in tree form with wind swept embers.

Not allowing anyone close enough is key to not getting into a battle

Knowing the farthest you can engage in is a piece of the puzzle too

Keeping in mind that just because the weapon can reach the marked areas doesn't mean the shooter can unless properly trained.

The window to bugout will be very short before battle begins. Maybe minutes, maybe days. For those who bugin, are you there or are you a ways away? How far? How far in bad juju? Maybe you aint so bugged in unless you work at home and then what about the rest who will help you run the 24hr ops? How many might be lost on the way en route? How do you predict those percentages of casualties? How do you replace them?

How bout animal attacks? How many kids or smaller framed folks will go down? Do the bears eat the garbage that will no longer be available in PAW? Do the Mt lions and Coyotes eat a steady supply of cats that will no longer be there?

    Now to disease:
Every time a disease or virus rolls thru you will encounter loss as there are too many to prepare for in most cases which is what make disease so effective against it's hosts.

How about plain old life injuries and illness? The odds are great that something like a farming accident will happen, a infection will set in, the ticker will tock and the knees will knock. How many of us are close to these days of aging? Aging is alot younger without constant medical help just ask a cowboy or mt man. How bout bad food or water? What's the casualty rate of those with mental illness now and can't get medications or mental illness obtained post event with no help such as PTSD or Postpartum Depression. How does one live with the fact that his kid was gunned down in battle because they didn't want to live with minor discomfort like being more than a mile from the grocery store? Yep that will make one crazy.
What's the casualty rate of all this without the regular Dr visits?

    The Belly:

How much food do you need to grow to not have casualties? How much to prosper? How much water so no one is lost to dehydration? What's the casualty rate if your water become contaminated by radiation, spilled chemicals from abandoned plants, dysentery from waste in the water from mcnastys upstream washing themselves and defecating openly?

We all strive to survive and as a father and retired platoon sergeant my goal is/was always 100 percent alive and well but reality is it never happens not even in heavy training. Pre-mission in the Army we always had to give assessments of worst case and mission capable. I think many prepper/survivalist underestimate the amount really needed to run ops day to day with casualties.

So not wanting to throw a problem out without an answer the answers are discussed here on S&P often. It planning, training, preparations, always actions, constant thinking and even discussion sometimes pissy discussion but thought towards a common goal nonetheless. All of there are done to counter Casualty Rates. So what's yours?

Matt, I love that you always give me a different perspective.
Totally threw me off what I was doing to ponder.

I know with a 5 year old and a 2 year old, a wife that has very little weapons training and myself, our rate is high.
Yes, we now live in a very low populated part of the sticks, but we are not safer- IMHO.

All you can do is make sure you make it through everyday, in the present and the future.
Pray, work hard, love, and know your limitations.

Even though I have endless water here, it could be compromised by a jealous neighbor who doesnt have it. Nothing is guaranteed.

      Dang, Matt good post.

      Aho.
You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

Nice dose of reality, good job!

On Day Three, tired from trying to secure their BOL with too few people, some are going to wish they put more into actually meeting others and developing a real relationship with them outside of the computer. After the first fight, perhaps with some people lost, the thought is going to come up again.
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

It happens even in the best units in the world that live, train and work together.

I wasn't sure how this would be received but here is something else for those without NBC equipment. Back in the days when I was a Private, Regan was President and the cold war ruled we conducted many NBC drills for not only the russkies but exposure from ourselves as the unit I was in dealt with that sort of thing. Many times we had no equipment and one day a young private noticed this and asked his NCO how we would know it was "All Clear". I was taken aside and quietly told since I was too smart for my own good that the leaders of whatever group was there would disarm the lowest ranking member and they would be forced to remove their mask. If he died then they would go a certain distance or time and then like lemmings to a cliff and lambs to the slaughter the same would happen until it was "All Clear". Pucker factor went up cause I was only 3rd on the list and the newest to the platoon and though I had heart I lacked any real skills of value at the time making me more expendable. I was then some years later put in the leadership position of making that choice and determining how it would be done. My choice differed from the norms though never enacted it was planned and I will answer for that along with many other things later.
So since many here don't have the NBC stuff sold here who will your Casualty be?
MIL?SIL? The youngest child since attachment isn't as much? The oldest since they make you the maddest? The spouse who didn't please you enough? You already ate the dog so he can't be him. Can't see the birds from the bugout boat? Hmm wheres that neighbor at again? Might not pay to be the newest member of the team without skills. Whos gonna be the casualty that you can live with and I guess without?

Casualties, yep, you still prepared with the ultra cool MBR money pit? I have alot to do to keep them down myself.

while i have complete get ups for all here in casa de protus..nbc in the form of cloud of death floating my way scenerio means ill more than likely bug out or shelter in place.. of course at that point i'll let the chickens free range and see what happens...but eating sleeping etc in full nbc gear is gonna suck. just prolongs what will happen with a pressure room, ewtc etc etc ..
