big earthquake off russia 8.2

a big earthquake hit this morning off russia deep in the ocean on jap side..
question - how big of an earthquake does it take to set off big damaging waves???

also. apparently chile is having some big earthquakes this week...
is this part of the pacific rim i've heard about.

I think the location and direction of shelf movement is almost as important as the size when it comes to producing waves because not every ocean earthquake produces them.

Coincidently, my daughter and I saw The Impossible movie last night. It was about the tsunami in Thailand. Excellent SHTF movie!

i thought an 8.2 out in the ocean could cause some trouble. it's been several days.
lowering my concern for earthquakes in the water!
