  • Satellite Internet

For the first time in my life since the days of Prodigy and AOL I am moving to a place that doesn't have Internet service via wires
What ISP's do you folks recommend that come via a dish?

I have heard many pros and cons but would like the input from folks that live " off grid" in a sense but yet still have the interweb since I have heard some of y'all talk about it before

    Gracias

i had two choices,,dish or go local provider....i went local..slower than "in town" but way faster than dial up etc. only issue is at times bad connection issues..but honestly..my "internet" time has been cut in 3/4's. right now is my online time sides the weekends mainly or nights (rarely)..lot of my surfing/checking in here etc is done via mobile when im in town and have 4glte service on my breaks.

Dish internet or Hughes net. We use Dish and it's not super great, but it's not bad. Make sure the area where the satellite points is COMPLETELY clear of even the smallest bits of brush. We had a nearby tree that to stand at the dish and look, was no where near blocking it. However when the limbs got heavy with rain, they evidently sagged and created a blockage. Net would get spotty in the rain and we just figured it was the rain. Decimated the area around that and the reception got much better.

Still, a hard hard rain will shut you down for a bit. I hear it's the same thing for satellite TV service, dunno.

We had Hughes Net for a couple years and I did not like the speed, reliability or customer support. Supposedly they have upgraded equipment and are faster now. Their fair access policy sucks too.

I switched from that to 4G tethering with AT&T service and that wasn't much better but I could at least use that while out on the road.

We recently got Exceed satellite Internet and so far it's head and shoulders above what I was getting with Hughes.

Currently I use Wildblue/Exede but I would not recommend them. The usage is tracked on a 30 day rotation (after 30 days the 31st day drops off and so forth) it can become annoying if you are downloading a large file. I get 15gb for 30 days and when I exceed that amount I am slowed to half until I get below 70% of my limit. My big problem comes in the form of downloads that fail and then have to restart eating up data 2 to 3 times.

I was on Hughes for 2 years. I dropped them as soon as the contract expired. Long ping times, low speed, high price, drops anytime there is a cloud in the sky or high wind, terrible customer service and all of that was with $1k worth of a hardware and $200/mo for "business class" service. If given the choice between Hughes and nothing, I'd take nothing.

I'm currently on a WISP called WiPower. It's microwave and takes line of sight, but if they or one like it are available to you it is a fast, stable connection. 3G/4G through Verizon is my backup connection and what I use when travelling. Fast enough for most things. The only downside is cost for the bandwidth.

This times a hundred!!!! I had Hughesnet for about 6 months and had constant troubles with connections, email account, equipment, etc. Then another 9 months of battles to get out of the two year contract. Ended up costing me almost $600 to get out of contract. Never again! Freaking smoke signals would be better than Hughesnet.

I agree about Hughes net I was very disappointed with it. I don't have any experience with exceed, but I use tethering with my AT&T phone and that works pretty good as long as only one computer is surfing at a time.
