    Solar water purification

    So my question is has anyone done this?
    Second question is I think it should work using a zip-lock type plastic bag. Or maybe even a camelback type bag. http://http://outdoorselfreliance.co...-disinfection/ Any comments?
    I think I'm going to see if I can find a way to get the water tested and do an experiment. If it happens I'll let you all know the results.

    I've seen this on 'Dual Survivors' but never tested it. I'd be really interested in the results. Please keep us posted.

      ok yes and no
      the "no":Some say the UV rays is what makes the water safe to drink. I can't make myself do it, I can't get a scoop from the puddle in the driveway and lay it in the sun just on uv and believe it. If that was all I could do and I was gonna drink it regardless I suppose it would worth the shot. Our local hiking place sells a uv pen thing you stick in there, turn on and wholla its supposed to be clean and a local church that went to Haiti said they were GTG but I dunno for myself.
      Now to the "yes" I have done it in very hot temps, 98+, where it got hot enough to pasteurize the water along with the uv in clear bottles only partially full and only with water that wasn't muddy.
      I did some of the half black bottles with the fresnal lens stuff I posted here and it works very well in the amount of time it takes.

        My BIL used one of the UV light pens on what in Thailand, Cambodia & Nepal and didn't have any problems.
        I too have been reluctant to try the water pasteurization method and then my body as bacteria tester. been down that road.
        Guess I'll find an water testing kit, and a thermometer and see what happens.

          Keep us posted on results please. It's not that I'm not interested I just don't wanna be the test dummy neither cause the 3 day trots aint no fun even when you are at home. I did drink the stuff that reached temps

            the turbidity of the water will be the key factor imho.
            any clear bag/bottle will work...

              I hadn't thought of the turbidity issue. I'll run it through a coffee filter first.

                Thats kinda what I was saying bout pulling water from the puddle in the driveway, LOL I live on a gravel road and forget not everyone does. The water would be muddy so does UV still work? dunno

                  Turbidity gives microscopic organisms a place to hide among bigger particles and is a big factor in disinfection... In municipal water plants, turbidity will increase chlorine demand needed to reach the desired residual. Which means, you need more UV and occasional swirls to make sure all the microbes don't hide on the "dark side" of the debris...

                  But to me, there are far better, easier methods of H2O disinfection than leaving a bottle of water in the sun... But if that is ones only option, I would do it...

                    I got buddies that use those steripens when we backpack. Yeah its small and lightweight and runs on batteries. My katadyn may be 14 oz but I trust it way more.
                    I am real weird about water that I drink.

                    I would like to see what comes about on this though.
