The other concern is what do you do when you wake up and find out that the central bank has decided that greenbacks are now toilet paper, and we have to use the new redbacks or whatever? Suddenly, that cash you have stashed is worth zilch, and nobody is interested in talking about it. This is a really good reason to have pm's, but not in bullion. Have it in the form of jewelry or whatever. You have a ring that's 99% pure silver or gold, and you can trade it for something else of value. If you have a silver coin, that's a bit iffy. People have been walking through borders with rings on their fingers for a long time now. A pocket full of gold coins may end up confiscated at the border.

Centuries ago they made "chains" that the links where relatively easy to break off so you could trade a single link or 3 for whatever you needed but still be able to wear the rest home.

It seems the stupidity all around now has the Cyprus banks closed until next week Tuesday... For those with little cash or live off of the debit card, it has to be sucking right now for them! I hope they learn their lesson...
