  • Property taxes on farmland/homesteads in GA

Does anyone know the specifics on property taxes for homesteads and/or farms with acreage? In my searches I am not finding a definitive definition on when a property can be deemed farmland or property that is with a home in rural areas. I've heard that any land in Georgia =>10 acres qualifies for a lower tax mil rate than your typical home in the 'burbs. Also, like homestead exemption, is this a separate filing that an owner must make to qualify for the lower tax rate?

Thanks in advance for any information on this.

Good question... Property taxes are very important to know before a potential "retreat" move...

Here in VA I have been very disappointed and disillusioned by the way property and "tangible personal property" is taxed here... There is ZERO restriction on what politicians can set the "mil rate" to... When I get to be an old fart, I honestly don't know if I will be able to afford my property taxes at such a future date, not knowing what the rate will be at that time... And you don't pay your taxes, within a several years they take you to court and then sell your property on the court steps... Kicking you out, leaving you with nothing... It has happened to many old seniors here in my area.

Although Florida has its own problems, at least when I lived there they have the SOH (Save Our Homes) restriction on property taxes... By law, your property taxes can only go up so much a year (2% I think), which is still worrisome, but atleast one can PLAN for it in the future. Here in VA, have no clue what NEXT YEARS tax rate will be, let alone 20 years from now...

This issue is very concerning to me as I get older...
