Opened a blue box of "Great Value Laundry detergent" (powder) today that was from 03. It's been just sitting with a few others in a cabinet above our washer. Our house is only air conditioned 2 1/2 to 3 months a year. Their was a slight bit of clumping but not bad, it break up easily with the plastic scoop. Ran a load with it no problems.

FWIW, this was some really cheap stuff. You want to look for SCENT FREE and BRIGHTENER FREE stuff to stockpile. Usually this is marketed as "allergy free" etc. Almost ALL detergents have brighteners in them, you have to scour the ingredient list well.

We've been buying and using the concentrated liquid for years now.

I have read articles about how to make your own laundry soap - or any soap for that matter, and I always wonder why? You still have to store the supplies don't you?

That would depend on what type of soap and what your natural resources are. The first soaps were animal and plant products.

Storing supplies usually last longer than storing the combined end product. =)
