    Fires
Many fires are set unintentionally. As my Family and I were overlooking some property we noticed a neighbors place on fire. We set into action grabbing a shovel they had handy and hooked up a water hose giving first priority to the grass area near the house. This fire was set by them burning a brush pile. The winds kicked up and the dry conditions with winter dead grass set things in motion. The volunteer heroic fire department showed up and made short work of it. Props to them cause I was getting tired and the smoke was taking its toll on my lungs.
Now here is the thing, had this been post PAW all would have been lost because there might not be power so no water and probably no fire department. I see this as a trend as many without experience or brains or even good luck who will set their places on fire trying to heat, cook or clear land. Apartments, close house neighborhoods and rural places with no fire breaks could be in serious danger. You know some apartment dweller is gonna try and cook inside with open flame and burn the place down, you know the weekend bbq master will move the grill too close to the house cause its cold but the kids are hungry. You know someone will try their superxp1000 camp stove in the BOB for the first time and it will fall over cause they used to large a pan or tried to move to fast etc. etc.
You can be prepared and get wiped out by the other guy pretty quick, kinda like driving in bad weather it

You mentioned apartment dweller... At least once a year here in our metro area, some clown burns down half their apartment complex due to careless cooking... It's either someone using a turkey fryer on a wooden balconey, or using a propane grill INSIDE their apartment or having the charcoal grill to close to the wall... Then 30 - 50 residents are homeless due to one person.

And that is exactly what worries me in grid down because we see now on good days

Since I am a battalion chief I am always thinking fire prevention and mitigation. Your best defense for fire when/if help is not available is just plain ole prevention. Once fire takes hold of something, if you cant flow hundreds (or thousands) of gallons/minute, you will loose the fight.

Got any prevention words of wisdom to add?
