  • Prevent a door kick in

Do anyone know of a good product that braces against a door to where it can't be kicked in?
It's the one that will break a leg if they try and kick hard enough
You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

I know the prop-rod things don't work. If there is an interior wall close to the door, measuring out and placing a 4x4 on the floor will slow them down. A lot depends on the construction of the door. If it's a solid metal door, that would probably stop them. Another trick might be to drill a small hole at eye level and running a straw through it connected to a can of pepper spray. Velcro the can to the wall next to the door, run the straw through the hole, and clip off the straw so it's level with the outer wall. The other trick is to reverse the door so it opens outward. That would work, I think.

I replaced our backdoor last year with a solid core, metal-clad door, no window in it. The weak spot I saw when my friends' house was broken into was not the door, but the frame trim splintered when it was kicked in. My new door has a metal plate on the frame that the deadbolt enters into. This metal plate has 3.5 inch long screws that go thru the trim, into the actual wall stud. I suppose a battering ram could bust thru, but not as easily as one could with those cheap half inch screws that come with most locksets.

Are you asking about this OP?

        Door Club - http://www.amazon.com/The-Club-20CA-...rity+door+stop

You best bang for the buck will be re-enforcing the door jam. A long time ago I was studying locksmithing. Part of the classes was showing how to setup a strong door jam. Having the proper reinforcement on the door jam will pay off in spades.

I use to have a video that showed some locksmiths setting up a good door jam and seeing how much abuse it could take. After the kicking, punching, prybaring...... they started ramming a forklift into the door and doorjam. The Door yielded before the door jam gave way. I can't find my video, but I searched on youtube and found this video that is a close remake (no forklift though :( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtOrWBcgHkA ).

The only thing that could be better is a steel door frame, a solid steel door, an anchored spot in the floor and a steel bar going from the floor anchor to a re-forced spot on the door.

The rod types kinda work...all depends on the anchoring on either side of the door. You have to have good tough anchor points on either side of the door and those rods will work okay. I'd say as a minimum 1/4 in by 2 inch lag screws (although 3/8 by 3 inches would be better) to secure the brackets into the sides of the door, not the jambs, but into the wall frame itself. Make them have to bring the whole wall down to get in

Kind of a homemade deal, but here's an idea if you don't mind having an ugly piece of steel hanging out there. Use one of the 2x4 post hangers like this:

Drill an extra anchor point hole in each of the "feet." Anchor into the frame using the aforementioned lag screws (1/4 or 3/8) and even add in a washer if you want a little extra added comfort factor. Put one set about a third of the way up, one about a third of the way down on each side of the door. Use a standard 2x4 to jam the door. Kind of excessive, but I can guarantee you it'll keep the honest folks honest and sway all but the determined. And even then, they'll probably give up since it means going through 18 gauge steel and a 2x4 to get inside. Relatively simple and easy fix for the most part, just not exactly aesthetically pleasing. Getting House Commander to sign off on it? There's the real trick.

Or for something a little less obvious, grab your local metal smith and have them form you up something similar out of 18 gauge or higher steel (I don't think you would really need more than 12 gauge sheet steel). Standard square shape with a large enough base to anchor it in. Say about an inch, maybe an inch and a half thick. Again, use the wall studs to attach it using lag screws. Little prettier maybe and the wife shouldn't object (too much).

Biggest problem is, there is nothing at all that will ever keep a person out entirely. The old warhead versus armor thing comes into play. Make stronger armor, bigger warheads emerge. Make a stronger door, folks bring a bigger ram to get in. But for the most part, make it hard to get in, someone will go someplace else...or come through the windows lol.
Experience is a cruel teacher, gives the exam first and then the lesson.

Out in the shop I put in a metal door and metal frame. I used two 4x4's on either side of the frame to reinforce it and laged them into place. Then I drilled two 1.25" holes 1.5' apart and reinforced it with 1/2" plate. I then drilled down into the concrete floor. Then I got two steel rods that go through the upper holes then slide down through the lower holes. These are behind the door on the inside. It has survived 2 break in attempts (one the guy tried using an ATV to ram it) and it has only caused some cosmetic damage.

when i worked in ghetto land........
                the units were,
steel framed, metal clad out swinging doors.
this means you aint kickin the door on ....
fed marshals tried once...they mangled the door and finally just broke the bed room window less than a foot away...to gain entry.
3 inch screws into the jamb and solid 1" throw dead bolts.

sides that,,if you cant get in the door you make one lol
Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!
