  • 10 DAY COUNTDOWN! :)

Dang man, all of these "the end is near" deals always sneak up on me.... Here I forgot we only had TEN DAYS before the end.... Wheeeewww,,, I got a lot to do.

COURSE I DON'T THINK ANYONE HERE REALLY BELIEVES THE STUFF IS GOING TO HIT THE FAN ON THE 21ST

But just for fun, let's wargame through what is SUPPOSED to happen (I'm not at all clear on that) and work through some scenarios.

I heard something about "3 days of darkness"- so it looks like we will be getting some good use of the PVS14's. I should probably fire the genset and double check maintenance on that, as the battery bank will hold out a couple days without sun input, but by the end of three days it will be low. So may need to fire up the old diesel beast to re charge batts.

People might be acting a little nutty (will be) if their is "3 days of darkness" so we would likely lock everything down and black everything out if we did use lights. I have to assume that the "3 days of darkness" will simply be the sun being blocked? Or will that include power outages for commercial power? Thankfully we are not near any stores, high value targets, etc. so I have to assume that the only "looters" we will see will be probably deer. That's o.k. we haven't filled the freezer yet.

What other than the "3 days of darkness" is involved with this scenario?

We have IN PLAY wargamed out things as funny as zombie attacks, might as well wargame out something like this. Always good to get the wheels turning.

    10 days folks.... :)

We're set for three days of most anything that's survivable. Of course if the poles shift and a jet liner falls from the sky and onto my head, well, I guess there's not much I can do for that.

Three days of darkness...I have no doubt that would turn into a total disaster once the crazies got over the initial shock and began their rampages.

So for fits and giggles in 10 days I'm going to:

Empty my savings, cash in bonds, and hopefully liquify my retirement. I'm not actually sure getting the money out of my IRA is possible in 10 days. If not I guess all that money will just sit on a computer server somewhere in la la land. Otherwise it will be converted into usable items.

Top off my stationary gasoline tank, top the trailer mounted disiel and gasoline tanks. Both gasoline tanks are running low right now. Good thing the myans were kind enough to give us this advanced warning. I have ten 5 gal gas cans and a few 5 gal disiel cans that will also be filled and stored with the genny.

Extra spark plugs for the generator.

I have a heavy duty gate fabbed for the front entrance to our property, but I need to get it installed. Thats about a two day project - one day for the two gate posts to set up in concrete, and the next to set the gates on the post and secure them. It will not deter foot traffic for long but will at least slow down a vehicle once in place. I'll put a cattle gap across the back entrance that can be pulled out of place with a tractor, leaving nothing but a steep ditch on either side. Still not a deterent for foot traffic but it should keep the average pickup truck from coming in that way in the unlikely event they find their way down the old logging roads.

Make sure the batteries are topped off in the thermal camera.

Make sure the two deep cycle batteries I use for trolling motors are topped off, and while I'm at it buy a few more.

Test my cheapo Vector 750W inverter - its been too long since I've done that, maybe even buy another one for a spare. This is how I plan to keep the thermal camera charged.

Change out those perimeter light bulbs that I've been putting off for the last 3 months. They are up high on the eves of the house. Time to break out the ladder.

      Cycle all the water storage.

I probably have too much ammo, and I'll be buying a whole lot more.

Buy a better shortwave radio. I'm not a HAM, but I'd like to be able to listen in for 'non-official' information on something better than I have.

Put my wife on inventory duty. Again. I've made up some fairly elaborate spread sheets showing what we have, where we have it, ect...and then never updated them as we've added to our stores. ID any items that the 'Pantry Gnomes' have stolen and replenish.

Get misc batteries, lots of them.

Buy more hay for the animals. I'm not sure of what 3 days of darkness is going to do to my winter forage, but it can't be good.

Come to think of it, if you are counting on your homestead egg production you'd better put a light on at the coop. No light for 3 days is going to wreak havoc on your hens laying schedule.

Install that propane tank and cooktop I've been dreaming of for the past two years. Get it filled. Get my grill propane tanks filled, and buy a few more.

Food...what can I say, we have food in buckets, food in cans, food in pouches and food in boxes. I'm getting more, as much as I can. Mainly staples like rice or beans that can be used as animal feed if not needed for human consumption.

There's more, there's lots more. Little exercises like this make you realize how much needs to be done. Everytime a hurricane is predicted to hit us we spend a couple days getting ready for it - doing many of the same items listed above. And everytime we do I realize just how far my pants are down if something happens unexpectedly. Its hard to live at Red Alert everyday, but I need to do a much better job than I'm doing now for spontaneous disasters.

Since it is on a Friday and I am on vacation till the end of the year, we are having a 12-21-12 party. Cookin venison, bear, and goose on the smoker and drinking home made ale.
The wife is going to be quilting with some friends and drinking some home made wine.

I do like the idea of the loin cloth and tribal but it is NY in December......shrinkage would be an issue.

              Agahahahahhah

So the moon is supposed to melt and the oceans turn to blood and earthquakes and alligators and anything else that all the predictors predicted. Has anyone ever seen the atheist god, the plate of spaghetti and meatballs? What will he do on the end day?
