  • 5 Year Cuts

Where I live tree crews that work for the powerline companies will come in and do what is called 5 year cuts. They will cut trees back and down to ensure that for the next 5 years they do not get tangle the lines. They will often leave the usable wood in manageable pieces. Stop and talk to them and they will tell you after they clear out its all yours.
All that is needed is a little small work to make it fireplace size. Sometimes a sonic gift card priced for a lunch or 2 can even accomplish that. I'm selective of which types of wood I take and avoid cedar because of allergies in my family but there is more than enough available. Watch for the crews in your area.

Wow, wish they did that around here.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

They do that here too Matt.

Not wood related but this summer the wife and I were diving back the gravel road to our BOL and the township guys were clearing out the ditches so we stopped and asked what they were doing with the dirt. Turns out the were just dumping it on one of their own farms, so we asked if they would mind dumping some on ours. They were more than happy to because it was a shorter drive. We ended up with 6 dump truck loads dumped right where I've been planning a backstop for my 50 yard range. Now I need to find a neighbor willing to spread it out and push it up higher and we'll be set.

I think the last time they cut the trees on this road for the power lines was when they installed the poles. Maybe 10/15 years ago. Power outages pretty often but it makes this road look like the road to nowhere. Hope they leave it alone.
