How many have or have even considered thermos and lunchboxes as part of their preps? If things go away PAW/SHTF then the nicer things of conveniance are first to go. Look at NY/NJ right now, cant just run out and grab a burger. So lets say you have your solar cooker, wood stove or fireplace kicking with a good pot of rice n beans to send out with say the field hands, long hunter, barter person, patrols or guard duty etc. How would you transport it? As much as i love MREs n such they wont last long so rice n bean staples will come sooner than later. You might need to store it as some point for a few hours till it is consumed and at a temp that doesnt allow bacteria to grow and make the clan sick. As the temps drop and we still move, gather, hunt and chop the hot chocolate is a calling cause it aint TEOTWAWKI yet!

As a 3 Decade user & advocate of 12V DC, I recently added to my gear: a 16 ounce Digital Controlled Coffee Cup, stainless steel.

I took cold from the tap water, & raised it from 57 to 104 degrees, in twelve minutes, on a gel cell 18 Ahr Battery. Hunters here use them in their 4WD to fix a hot cup of soup, I have not done that yet, but at $20.00 I thought it worth the test.

BTW, the test was a reality exists test, I did not charge the battery, it was the one by my bed running a high lumen output LED light, featured somewhere on the forum ... to pre-charge a battery seems to me unfair! I use the light, regularly, rather than getting up to turn the "store bought" electric lights off... using it right now, as I type!

But the Stanley or Thermos Wide mouth is a great breakfast starter, boiling water, stir in your oatmeal, the last thing before sleep, and wake up to hot cooked oatmeal, you did add the butter etc while preparing it, right?

Excellent idea Matt. We've got extra Stanley thermoses, several insulated lunch buckets, water jugs and large ice chests. We've collected them over the years because of my work and years of living in the mountains where we had to drive a few hours to shop and needed the coolers to transport refrigerated and frozen goods. We keep our eyes open at the thrift shop and garage sales for these things to add to the collection. Doesn't hurt to buy extra screw caps for those thermoses. I've broken a few at work. You can get em' cheap on Amazon.com.

Here is a site about Thermos Cooking. I found it a while back, but have only done it once. Need to do it more now that fall is here.

Another interesting cooking alternative. Thanks Sheepdog!

I have several sizes that I use. One thing I do is wrap them inside my sleeping bag and they stay hot alot longer. The site looks cool.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

When I thought about it Thermos cooking met my needs. Quick, easy and inexpensive. How easy is it to dump in some dry ingredients and add boiling water, close shake a bit and eat it 4-6 hours later. I just need to do it more often.

I'm now on a search of the local Goodwill for a wide mouth thermos. Also I'm going to do some experimenting with Harmony House foods and thermos cooking. I'll let you know.
