  • Hurricane Sandy During and After Report Thread

Ok, so Sandy is a big storm now, with a lot of hype. I've been watching it but have been busy with work and other things, anyone need a monitor? Who's in the path for the storm? I know Gus14 is prepped up for it!
    Who else?

    Rainfall potential is interesting:

I notice that most of rainfall is expected to be south and north, mostly south, and over Maryland. My wife has friends in that area who say that school has been closed for at least 2 days, today and Tuesday.
I really don't like the way this storm sets, it's a large rainmaker that will be affected an area that's had a brush with a major storm recently.

      Storm analysis:

Might be a good time for everyone east of the Missippi to check their gasoline preps!

Wind is starting to pick up. Sustained at 10-13 with gusts up to 25. Steady rain some decreased visibility.
We have everything storm ready so it is safe to say this is a no biggie...........so far. I am sure by 3am things will be different.

Very surprisingly, my neighborhood didn't lose power even though the wind was a steady 40-50mph with gusts up to 70-80mph the better part of last evening. Just a trace of water pulse thru the block wall of my basement but the sump pump was working overtime. We were forecast to get 4-6" here.
I work for a large multi sport retailer and we were out of lanterns and most of our flashlights since Friday.
Alarmingly, my brother texted me last night wondering if I was still at work because all he had was one mini mag light and a couple of candles. It's time to start getting him on board.

From the looks of it, this isn't going to be a specific Eastern Seaboard problem. Pretty much everything east of the Mississippi is at risk of high winds, large rainfalls, flooding, snow or combinations of all of the above.

              Everyone making out okay?

I am very happy to report that upstate NY didnt have a single issue. We were very fortunate.
We just sent an engine crew to Long Island to help out down there....those poor folks got the snot kicked out of them.

I've lived in areas like that. Even before prepping, when I saw something like that coming (and much lesser storms) I got outta dodge. U can replace belongings, not people.

Here's another reason to make sure your gas cans are topped off prior to a known emergency:

I'm bad about waiting until I get down to a can or so before filling them all up. This does give a reminder and a message that I was wrong.

And still wondering what "DoD is setting up free emergency fuel stations" means.

IMO SHTF here. Maybe not forever but for some it was/is. So lemme ask a few things.
Who bartered with gold/silver since no cards worked? Probably no one
Who traded excess (anything-fill in the blank) for fuel to someone who had it? Probably no one because no one had enough fuel for trade
How many were gun heavy and not supply ready? One I know of for sure as we chatted via email and have known each other for 10yrs, his honesty was good for him as well as me
Wonder how many boat buggers we had that fared well?
Anyone show up with a 50cal can full of nickels to buy food/fuel/electricity?
How many made it out of the cities to get supplies? Enought to qual the Golden Hoarde? I think so, so iff you live near a city like this now what?

HAM guys fill me in on whats going on up there and how it helped you hear what was said.

IMO you either got it or ya dont. Period. No one ran out and traded a box of 30cal armor piercing super max ultras for 2gl of fuel, no one ran out and traded a bag of rice for a phone charge. Cash money ruled. A bag full of mercury dimes didnt buy you heat or power.
One person i know ended up being extracted because she ran out last minute and bought supplies but with no power/heat and living way up there in height and being older she was done in 20hrs. If you live where you cant have xy&z then move. I dont care what state you live in, if you live in place where you cant have xy&z like a HMA then you may not be better than them. If you live in an all electric high rise then you are hosed! Last time she visited she raved over all our solar lights. I offered to buy her some and ship them up there. Her statement "I dont have but one window and it doesnt get sun"! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, i take this for granted! I live in the sun, my house has all kinds of windows, I try and find shade I got so much, crazy

a small propane heater and a sack full of cylinders will allow you to survive, stay, maybe cook, to simple

get it? got it? then go get it. good
BTW it aint all over up there neither, long way to go
