there were drawings in the news papers of people standing out side looking up at the telegraph wires and they were on fire! people also said in the articles that there coins got so hot you couldnt touch them! no one new then what caused it but they believe now it was an extreme solar flare! nasa has recently stated that this is a real threat and a 100 hundred year event and its over due by 50 years! everything metal will get extremly hot including ammo!! this is no normal EM burst like the ones caused by nuclear bombs and such. this is unpresidented!! put your ammo in faraday cages!!

A metal military ammo can is a Faraday cage.
Another (kinda extreme but never the less...) reason to have some ammo buried.Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"
Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"
Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

the metal does not touch inside at the top there is a seal this will allow electricity to pass and it needs to be lined with a non conductive material and they are not lined that way. a faraday cage needs to be completely enclosed in metal and some times metal tape needs to be used to accoplish this also there needs to be a non conductive liner on the inside. but buried under the ground 4-5 feet would probly do it. but even a small amount in your home or garage could be a nasty bomb inside a ammo can! the can will heat up and the contents wii explode its the perfect bomb! also all combustable materials in cans will explode!

One again, if ammo heating up in a can due to induced current from a solar flare is a genuine concern, then your biggest issue isn't an exploding ammo can.---------------

Think gas cans in your garage, gas tanks in your car, the list goes on. I don't see this happening."Common sense might be common but it is by no means wide spread." Mark Twain

Again, as QRPrat77 pointed out, the last large event to hit the earth wasn't quite as bad as was originally let on. However, if the same situation was to happen today we would be facing a more serious threat. But to start exploding things inside cans? Not seeing it. And as Jimmy pointed out, gas tanks on cars. Also think frameworks of buildings, shoot even the keys in your pocket or the door knobs on your house would ignite the wooden doors. Guess I'm going to have to take down my steel wind chime now since it can set the house on fire...
Again, the likelihood of this happening is so far remote it's almost rivals buying a Barrett M82 to protect against dinosaurs that escape from a harbor facility in San Diego. At least that would be my excuse for buying a Barrett. I mean, if we are going to be prepared for all eventualities, that'll be on my list, escaped velociraptors and t-rex. (what's the plural of tyrannosaurus rex? rexi?)
So again, exploding ammo cans would be the least of our concerns when pretty much everything today is made from or incorporates some type of conducting metal. If, and by if we are talking huge dinosaurs escaping from San Diego odds, something like this was to happen cities would burn to the ground, cars burn up from igniting the interiors even before the gas tank explodes, power lines causing mass forest fires, folks dancing the Macarena (or maybe the Electric Slide would be more appropriate for this situation) from the hot change and keys in their pockets, my Diet Mountain Dew cans blowing up (which is a crime in itself), human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!
And without further ado...Last edited by Grand58742; 10-04-2012, 01:47 PM.Experience is a cruel teacher, gives the exam first and then the lesson.
