my sons are studing science and we started talking about the possibility of a solar flare. we also concluded that if a strong enough solar flare was to occur like the one in 1859 or even much stronger. if enough electrical energy was released into our atmosphere the magnetic poles would be depleted and a world wide lightning storm would develope from the static electricity caused by the rotation of the earth that could be very heavy and last for days. jesus made some interesting comments in mark 13 about the "abomination that causes desolation"this is not revalations but something very different! everything jesus said that needs to pass before this would occur is very close to being done. gidion bible web site says that the new testament has been deliverd to 98% of the nations on the earth and that is the last piece and is very close.first of all the solar flare will knock out all electrical and shortly after that if the storm is strong enough the lightning will begin until the electrical plasma is depleated by the lightning. if your ammo is not in a faraday cage it could explode when the flare knocks out all the electronic devises.news paper articles from 1859 stated the telegraph wires were on fire and people could not keep there coin money in there pockets or there hands because it was to hot. fine print news papers were able to be read in the middle of the night as far south as the carolinas because of the aroraborialis. people need to be ready for this nasa says its a 100 year event and its been 150 years since the last real bad one!!

How would my ammo explode from an electromagnetic pulse?Knowledge is Power, Practiced Knowledge is Strength, Tested Knowledge is Confidence

all metal that is conductive will get very hot! brass is a very good conducter the news paper articles from 1859 solar flare said that the telagraph wires were on fire and coins were so hot people could not touch them. there were drawings of people standing out side looking at the telegraph wires and they were on fire! there was no coating on the wires during this time. imagine how hot metal has to get to be on fire!

1. Solar Flares are interesting, and can cause us some serious problems with electronics. They are EMP events without parallel, and they happen every year. A solar flare needs some correlations to happen namely, the flare itself needs to happen in a place that will hit the earth directly. See this thread: https://www.survivalandpreparednessf...solar-activity for more information about solar flares, and the Carrington Event in particular.
2. Not sure where you are going with the static storm/Mark 13 connection, but I do know that the 'abomination of desolation' Jesus was talking about referenced events in the history of the Children of Israel that can be pinpointed. Research some more in Daniel, study a real historical figure named Antiochus Epiphanes (IV), and the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. You'll find out some really neet information about pigs sacrificed on the altar of The Living God and how many Christians died during the seige of Jerusalem in 70 AD.
3. The telegraph wire fires, and hot coins illustrate the difference between observation and anecdote. The wire catching fire wasn't the wire catching fire, rule number one of electrical connection is bare wire isn't bare there's all sorts of cruft that can burn on the outside of wires. What was observed was:Telegraph systems all over Europe and North America failed, in some cases shocking telegraph operators.[5] Telegraph pylons threw sparks and telegraph paper spontaneously caught fire.[6] Some telegraph systems continued to send and receive messages despite having been disconnected from their power supplies.[7]
Now let's talk about anecdotes. Saying 'My gold coin got so hot I couldn't hold it' is an ancedote, and I have several problems with it.
A. I don't have a context to judge whether the speaker is speaking in hyperbole or not. If a banker said this his next statement might have been, 'so you better keep your gold in my vault, where it will be safe!' *wink wink* Also, journalists of 1859 were every bit as prone to hyperbole as they are today. The first job of every newspaper writer is to sell stories, always has been.
B. I don't know what hot means. Saying something is hot is a qualitative measurement, not a quantitative one. In other words, if someone told me their gold coins were too hot to handle because of a solar flare, I would call him a sissy.
C. I don't believe that there was enough current induced in the coins to heat them at all. It would be hard to test this but I'm pretty sure that the ionizing energy needed to overcome the protection of the magnetosphere and induce a current in a sack of coins to the point where it would be too hot to handle would be large enough that the hot money would be the least of my worries.
For this reason, I'm also not worried about inducing a current big enough to cause my casings to heat up to the point where something will explode.
4. The Carrington Event is more like a once every 500 year event. We get solar flares all the time, had one a couple weeks ago that made communications difficult on HF, and made my receivers noisy. Hated it because I was testing a radio, and couldn't because of a freakin' solar flare. Stronger flares are more rare, but we have them literally all the time, and can have them any time we have a sunspot on the sun. It doesn't matter if we are at a solar maximum (like now) or solar minimum.
How do you prepare for solar flares?
1. Same as you would for any EMP event.
2. Keep yourself informed of space weather events. If your electronics survive the intial flare pop, then you have about 12-72 hours to protect it from the coming geomagnetic storm.

Well said QRP! Thank you!

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"
Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"
