  • And now for something completely different....

I went to the gun show today and saw something I never thought I would ever see. At one of the tables was an Amish guy filling out the paperwork to buy a gun. I don't know if he had left the community, since he was wearing bib overalls instead of the usual pants with no rear pockets and blue shirt with suspenders, but the woman with him was in traditional Amish dress. She was standing over his shoulder and walking him through the form.

I never thought I would see that. Can they own guns? Is the freak-out reaching that level?

Perhaps Mennonites? Some of their offshoots are more lenient in certain aspects.

Either way, it would garner my attention as well.

Amnish and Menonites own firearms and often their beliefs collide with state laws on them being progun and not so pro on having pictures taken for licensing etc. You normally dont see them with ARs and fancy weapons with tacticool gear and ellaboarte setups but generally what i refer to as working weapons to hunt with. The beliefs are not that that can't have things but not to become reliant on them and just as in many other religions and cultures there are varying levels in beliefs too.
I'm gonna add something here. People mistake these groups for being pacisfist and nonviolent because they dont mess with no one, dont force their beliefs, dont hate you and want to kill you because you dont believe as some religions do and so on. Their culture is permeated with violence from assaults to murder though on a much smaller scale than we are used to and usually internal. They kill to eat and I believe would defend themselves if needed as a culture. Do not underestimate anyone as it will be the last mistake you ever make in a fight.

I'm friends with several families of old order Amish and they all own guns. Some own bows but I've not seen any of them with handguns.

There are different sects of Amish with the old order being the ones who use very little modern technology.
