CAN I GET AN AMEN????? wow!!

NO, "I' did NOT write this. But in a round about and nicer way, I said a lot of the same things at the Prepper conference in Charlotte recently.

Why I Hate Preppers, by Allen C.

    Permalink | Print

I may as well go ahead and apologize to anyone who is already offended by my title without apologizing for offending you. I do not actually hate preppers. I'm just fed up with them. While I'm at it I may as well apologize for generalizing. I don't like putting labels on anyone any more than I like being labeled, but it is necessary to generalize in this case so if you consider yourself in one group, but the other better describes you then I accept that in advance. If it sounds like I apologize a lot it is because I do. Survivalists being antisocial in nature, I sometimes say things that are inappropriately blunt and get criticism for doing so. You may disagree that I distinguish between the two, so let's defer to an objective third party on the differences. Popular Mechanics magazine did a fair job of explaining it:
Preppers call themselves Preppers, in part, to distinguish themselves from survivalists, a term that conjures up images of a paranoid loner hiding out in a cabin. The Preppers focus on reaching out to other people, and they are avid social networkers. They share tips on things like canning, Port-a-Potties, and other useful skills to have for natural disasters. And they say the effort does not stem from fear. "It's encouraging, uplifting," insists Janet Liebsch, a dedicated prepper, who, along with her husband, publishes guides like It's a Disaster. "Once you start learning, you get addicted."
If you are a survivalist you may have already asked yourself why in the world anyone would want a Port-a-Potty. You may also be thinking

To be fair though I work in a supermarket and over here 3 days would be a large overestimate...

The whole philosophy in that regard is basically that stock belongs on the shelves not in the warehouse racking. So everything’s done on a ‘just in time’ system, whereby if it won’t fit on the shelf it should really be on the delivery.

Of course the system isn’t perfect and in practice every 10 pallets of delivery yields perhaps 1-3 pallets of overstock, but there have been a few occasions when I've seen the warehouse completely emptied.

Obviously like he says in the article though, this situation would be very different for a store in rural areas of even of the States,

                So yeah it's a lack of critical thinking;

'X is true here therefore it must be true everywhere.'

I think concepts like "3 days of food in the store" is nebulous. Why? Cause Billy Ray Sixpack isn't going to roll up to the market and buy his normal 1.24 days worth of food- snacky smores and cheesy poofs. He is going to FILL HIS CART, pay with CC, if that's declined he will write a bad check if necessary.

FEW people are going to go into the grocery store and buy their "normal" 2.5 days of food. The majority are going to fill their carts, put it on their cards, pay with whatever they can/have.

I think if we look at "normal buying" statistics, they aren't going to be usable for planning.

Excellent point!! Just look at the craziness of Black Friday and let that be a guide of what a store would look like multiplied by 1000 in bad situation.

The masses will buy whether they have the money or not, whether the fantasy of "$150. can of beans" happens or not. At the point of panic, they will do whatever to get whatever they need. The reality is they should have putting a little back ahead of time, they won't however.

You don't want to be out in the mayhem, I don't care what fantasy survival book you read or what so called expert told you things like "you can always buy food."

Being a survivalist means being willing and able to AVOID potential problems. Last minute shopping runs to get things you should have/could have been getting a little at a time NOW are just stupid stop gap plans for people that are not taking survival seriously.

Survivalists plan ahead. Sheeple are the ones that make shopping runs at the last minute in a panic.

Yes, EVERY time a big storm is bearing down on an area, be it a major snow storm hitting the northeast or a hurricane headed towards Florida, the news cameras always show the crowds clearing the shelves bare at the local supermarket... So it's not hard to believe that it would happen in a big crisis.

As a side note, several years ago, my job was delivering baked goods to retail outlets... everything from mom and pop corner stores to Target and Walmart. Most of these stores did not have much of any "food stuff" stored in back - it was all out on the shelves.
