Ammo purchases....

Just curious if anyone else is wondering why the government agencies are all buying up a little ammo at a time. Social Security Administration just put in a bid for 174,000 rounds (would love to know why). NOAA put in for 46,000 (to protect fish hatcheries.) We all know about DHS getting hundreds of millions of rounds and riot gear. Is anyone minding the store anymore? Is there any type of accountablity going on? Maybe I am missing the boat a little, but I have been to SSA before and the nice little lady behind the counter wasnt packing heat.

I like to load up on ammo right now myself, but the ammo is getting expensive. and if the govt will buy a 300 dollar hammer, how much is it paying for ammo?

Pretty much a non issue. NOAA has a marine law enforcement division, and 46000 rounds is about what they need for practice for a couple of years. not really a big deal. They shoot what they carry (shouldn't we all), and as far as price is concerned: look at the price of 'surplus' federal HST (this is what they are buying) and remember, Federal sells HST only to the agencies, the agencies sell surplus to distributors. I've seen 50 round boxes of 180grain HST
only about 10 more than 20 round boxes of gold dots at the local gun stores.
Here's hoping that they decide they have too much, and can glut the market!
I'd like to buy .50 a round .40 180gr HST...
especially if it had 'propriety' low flash powder...

Now think about this one....

So if there are 300 million firearms in the U.S. registered or not, how many bullets do you think gun owners have? The casual safe queen up to the true owners that trainer and competition folks. We probably have 30 billion to ourselves.

The agencies really arent buying anymore than usual. Folks are just seeing it for the first time. If you look at the purchase order its not that much and the frangible stuff is for indoor ranges for quals and practice. With all the agencies now dumped under the same DHS umbrella it appears larger than normal but look at past POs and you will see the numbers were always there and some of the POs state "up to x number of rounds". In otherwords IF our agency uses all of what we order the company should be capable of making us more if needed. And yes there is accountability and truthfully limited funding.
The SSA has armed guards and has for years, dont trust me research it on USAjobs. In fact SSA is a quite active place in many areas as some people lose their minds in there. The lobbies are not the hang out place for sure. The VA is another place that can be active as well. The fisheries are located in areas that also require protection against animals not just people. In fcat check out LEO jobs on USAjobs and i think you will be surprised at who all has LEO divisions like the FDA etc.

Thanks for the clarification. I just thought it was odd that all of a sudden it was getting more press than usual, and since I keep my tin foil hat rather loose, when it tightened up, I took notice...

To give you an idea of how quatities break down, lets look at the !OMG! 174,000 rounds of .357 SIG! HOLLOWPOINT! 'bullets' the Social security administration ordered, just cuz that number came out after the original post.
I don't know if you been to the office recently, but I've noticed that they do have armed watchdogs there. They look at you NASTY too, even if you smile at em, least the ones around here do. I might too if all I had to back me up was a pistol shooting a souped up 9mm.
Anyway, if you do the math, you discover that them 174 thousand!!!!eleventy!!1! rounds amounts to about 590 rounds per ugly guy with a gun. If you are like me, you kinda snickered at that because I know I don't have as much ammo as some folks round this board, and even I carry more than 590 rounds in my boxes that may or may not have ammo in them...
So there's the math.
174K ain't that much.
PS, you can do the same math on the initial GOBTRILLION Homeland security ordered, and it averages out to about 1000k rounds a person or so, and that's spread over 5 years.
Jest sayin.
