The Real Deal: Solar flares cause power grid failures
G.McClure, 2 Muluc (Water), New Era on Tzolkin (Mayan)Calendar - or 03 jl 2012 Gregorian calendar
Four M-class solar flares (Coronal Mass Ejections or CME's) in 48 hourstriggered critical storms with hurricane force winds in the eastern partof North America and U.S. over the weekend, warning again of the powergrid's vulnerability. Aurora borealis is visible over a greater areaand in off-season. In 1989 solar flares caused widespread grid failuresand blackouts in eastern Canada and parts of the northeast U.S.
Monday (yesterday) saw another massive solar flare, just shy of X-classstrength at M5.6, which will reach Earth by Wednesday [1 NASA]. Accordingto Webster[1], this space weather is capable of causing static, interruptedcell phone and radio transmissions, and lighting up the sky with brilliantauroras. "The eruption also hurled a CME into space, but not directlytoward Earth. The south-traveling cloud could deliver a glancingblow to our planet's magnetosphere on July 4th or 5th," Spaceweather.comstated.

Interesting Factoids
* How long would it take to drive to the Moon? At 238,000miles, and 55 mph, you would arrive the Moon in 180 days. However,if you plan your trip right, and go during perigee, the distance is 221463miles and just 168 days. My jeep has 299,875 miles on it - I've beenthe distance to the moon and 1/3 of the way back in it. (I've loggedover a million and a half miles on ground.)
* Can you hear the Northern lights? Ancient aleut andeskimo legend says that if you hear the lights, you've gone crazy and younever will come back. They don't make a sound.
