    http://www.democratandchronicle.com/...ON04/306250010

Most of us have seen the video of this 68 year old grandmother being humiliated and bullied by middle schoolers. This incidents bothers me on several levels, but primarily because it reflects the downward spiral of society.

Never would anyone in my or my sons generation have done such a thing. It's like the thread on the police arresting a parent for slapping their child, children seem to have no limits or control in our society.

Neither parents of schools can do anything to stop it. Kids know that no one can do anything about their behavior, and that speak volumes about the future of our society.

Weird. I thought I replied to this, but here goes Reply Take 2:

I had the Man Cub watch this. He was absolutely horrified. We also talked about what he should do if he saw someone being bullied. It is a great teaching moment.

We all want our children to be successful in school, sports, etc. But, we, as a society, would be better if we cared more that our children were kind and other less tangible achievments.

I also felt bad for this lady, but just what does a bus monitor do if not keep order on the bus? I'm afraid she was outmaneuvered.

And UnSupported! In the classroom you have a bit more control, on the bus you are not much more than a fixture. Administration is not always on your side in either situation!

From my experience as a substitute teacher, it is very difficult to regain control once you have relinquished it. It is a hundred times better to go in tough and lighten up if the situation warrants it. If you give middle school kids an inch, they will try to take a mile!

My sister is a teacher who has shared with me some of the 'can and cannot' steps that can be taken to control students. In Florida you cannot say or do anything that may embarrass the student. The only power the teacher has is to send the student to the principle's office. The principles my suspend the student or call the parent. The students knows the deck is stacked against teaches and bus monitors.
