  • Alternative use for Solar Lights

Patriot Lady got this email from a friend. I thought this was worth sharing.

I have a friend who used her Solar Lights inside the house at night when the electric power went off during a hurricane. She stuck them in jars and bottles and said they gave off plenty of 'free light' in each room. She put them outside in the daytime and brought them back inside at night for several days while the power was off. They are safe to use and cheaper than batteries. She recommended we bring a Solar Light into our own house one night to test it for ourselves.

Due to a thunderstorm, we lost power for about 5 hours one night. We were scrambling around in the darkness, looking for matches, candles, and flashlights. Then we looked outside and noticed our Solar Lights shining brightly all around the patio, stairs & dock. My wife walked outside and brought several of the solar lights inside. We stuck the Solar Light pipes into plastic drink bottles and they made the nicest, brightest, safest, lighting you could imagine. We put one in the bathroom, one in the kitchen and in the living room.

There many types of Solar Lights available. We bought quite a few and put them all around our yard. They look nice and do not attract flying bugs like the outdoor lights around our doorway. The lights we have fit into 20-oz. water bottles and also fit into most larger 2 liter bottles. If you need a weight in the plastic bottle to keep them from tipping over, put in a few of the colorful flat marbles they put in aquariums and vases. You can also use sand, aquarium gravel, or whatever you have available.

The Solar Lights we have are perfect inside our home. They burn all night when needed and next day we take them back outside where they recharge and are ready for use again when needed. Solar Lights are the perfect light solution for power outages. I had never thought of it before seeing what my friend did, and now you know about this idea too.

Excellent idea!! My wife's been after me to get some of those for decorative purposes. Now I can solve two issues in one move. I love these kinds of ideas!!!

We use them for this all the time during storms. A tip though is bring them in before the snow storm, I lost ours during the blizzard and chest high drifts LOL.Also mine have removable heads from the stems so I can just set them where ever
dont forget they charge either a AA or AAA battery too that can be easily removed foe other stuff as well

We use the ones with the detachable heads and set them on top of lid-less mason jars. It's very effective.

I echo the detachable heads. You can take the posts to kill vampires with.

A good idea is go to your local wally world/ target/ etc after summer time when they are getting ready for the holidays and you can find these solar lights on clearance. We got a few that way.

I've been doing this for a couple of years.

I have even upgraded a couple with some rechargeable AAA batteries I had. The ones that come in them aren't the greatest.

This was mentioned in another thread on how to recharge your batteries. Don't know how long it takes to get the batteries back to full charge though. I did see beprepared.com listing the Nokero lights (these were mentioned on this forum some time ago).

Yep. First talked about this in 98 when they first started coming out. Charge batteries, regular lighting and change out the white led to an IR led for other marking and illumination purposes ;)

If you change out the white led's for infrared, you will have a great advantage in extending the range of your cheaper nightvision scopes. They depend upon IR for illumination, but you don't want to turn on the scope IR lights or you become a prime target. By having IR sources around your area, even a cheap nightvision will work for you. You may not see the intruder well, but you can see shadows. I expect that they would be trying to eliminate the IR sources first, so that might expose the opposition. My thought is to have IR illluminators protected by steel pipe and have a mylar balloon, permanently laminated, as a convex mirror to spread the light. The pipe would protect the illuminator, while their efforts to shoot it out would allow you to pinpoint their location.
