  • What's your best homemade or commercial bug repellant?

    Been trying to pick the brains of those who are regulars in the woods...

    We are getting into the season where bugs seem to be the top of the food chain, so was wondering what you guys use to deter them?

    I usually rub hamburger juice on my buddy when he's not lookin

    I use the thermacell and deet on the lower extremities for ticks

            Mine's my wife. She attracts skeeters like a bug zapper. Have her sit about 20 feet away and I'm good LOL

              thermacell here as well.

              I dont use deet.
              picadrin (sp) or such. and if i do use deet its on my shoes/pants legs and gear thats it.

                  Thermacell or cutters brand deepwoods. don't spray high concentrations of DEET on anything plastic you are fond of. I remember some S.F. types using pytthying(SP) in Arkansas to chase the ticks & such away. they would spray in on the ground and it was a stampede of varmits out of the area. A headnet for the face if you don't like spray.

                    I think EX121 is talking about Pyrethrin or Pyrethrum.
                    Pyrethrum is a derivative of the Chrysanthemums, Mums produce compounds that most bugs will not tolerate.
                    Certain mites don't mind the Pyrethrum.
                    It is considered an organic control. Some Pyrethrins are synthesized instead of naturally extracted, which would technically mean they are inorganic.
                    Still safer than most chemicals and insect critters don't build an immunity.
                    As with most insecticides, studies show Pyrethrins can cause damage to human immune and nervous systems. Don't overuse!

                    The safest insecticide and the best smelling is Definitely Hamburger Juice on a buddy or even the wife!!
                    If the wife figures it out, she might forget that skillets aren't to be used as fly swatters when a skeeter lands on you while you're asleep!!
                    Do the right thing, because it is the right thing to do!

                          I was talking to a neighbor girl the other day and she said that she had heard that a bounce sheet would keep away mosquitos. So she tucked one in the top of her 6mo old son's stroller and hasn't had any problems with them since.

                            Oh yeah, forgot to mention this. In the summer I wear cargos and have a sheet in each pocket. My wife read this on Pinterest last year.

                            Dont know if it works any better or not but whatever helps.

                              i read that dryer sheets and fragrant body soap shavings will repel bugs but also repel deer, great for the garden but bad for hunting.
