  • Conspiracy theory stuff:

    It's election year again...what does that have to do with conspiracy theories and this thread in particular?

    Typically starts getting folks dander up about all sorts of dot connecting that shouldn't and can't be connected and some crazy stuff. Here's an example.

    American students are not good at math as reported by News Agency X.

    1+1=2

    2 divides into 666.

    Obama said our students should get better at math as reported by News Agency Y.

    Obama is the anti-Christ because he supports math!

    Somehow it just doesn't fit does it? But some folks do think along those lines and will post up some crazy stuff online (here, there, everywhere on the net). They connect dots that shouldn't be connected, bring up wild and unverified stories of grand scale conspiracies (think the FEMA camp stories and Rex 84 that makes it's way around the net every so often) and generally do not do their homework in researching what amounts to nothing at all. Or using basic common sense by seeing the sky actually is blue and not falling at all. Some folks gulp down the entire story, hook, line and sinker and pass it on as truth. When in reality, it amounts to nothing more than wild conjecture and interpretation of events that are not connected. But some will say:

    "But it's all super secret stuff! The government classified it and they know how to keep secrets!"

    Uhh, yeah, sure. And how did you come by this information since it's so super highly secret?

    "I had a friend who works on base that told me the military is planning on large scale operations to place the country under martial law! They were training for riot control and tossing conservative groups into internment camps! I saw the pictures online and heard about the training! And I heard Alex Jones reporting it the other night so it HAS to be true!"

    Ever think your "friend" is pulling your leg or doesn't have all the information and wildly guessed the military was planning on that by wildly connecting the dots that didn't exist in the first place? And please, the military has roughly 3 million folks in the Guard, Reserves and Active duty. You think that all three million were sworn to pinkie promise secrecy about something like that and nobody would talk? Routine training happens all the time and sometimes it happens to be riot control. But somehow folks seem to think it's the start of a grand takeover and martial law because COINTELPRO was never really terminated and the FBI, CIA, DHS and the Men in Black have been keeping tabs on them since they bought the movie JFK from Amazon and got put on the "list." Something like that...

    So please folks. Conspiracy theories are fun and generally provide a few minutes of entertainment. But please, please don't go posting up each and every theory that has no research or background just because you read about it on some obscure blog or heard it on a radio broadcast. Or post up conjecture that has no basis of fact. Folks can and will connect dots from multiple sources that are not connected and sell it as truth. Take Alex Jones for example. I listen to Alex Jones every once in a while because he is entertaining. Do I take everything he says as truth? Absolutely not. Will Alex Jones continue to make radio broadcasts and write books about things that are probably not? Sure he will. Why? Because if he didn't, he would have no readers or listeners and hence would make no money and starve. So he continues to sell the things that do sell and folks take as the gospel truth. And these same folks go on without even thinking for a moment it's not what it seems or there is some other reasonable explanation for the events that he reports. And further spread the information by claiming it is what it really isn't.

    And Alex Jones knows this and continues to throw out the wildest stories he can because people will believe. Why? Because it sells! And it's entertaining! And people believe it without even thinking for one moment it might not be the truth or can be explained very simply with something else! Shoot, he might not even believe in most of it, I don't know. But the fact is most of his stuff can be interpreted in different ways or explained by normal occurrences. This isn't a rant against Alex Jones (again, I like him because he is entertaining) but against the grand conspiracy theories some folks like to throw out because they interpreted conjecture and innuendo, twisted the facts and reported it as the truth.

    So facts are what we are looking for in General Discussion. Reported facts by a reputable news source and not "I head it from a friend who has a brother's cousin's roommate in the Department of Housing and Urban Development." Not some grand connect the dots scheme about how the President has rigged the elections because a software company bought another. Or how REX 84 is about to be implemented because someone saw a train full of military equipment heading through Oregon. No guessing at events and interpreting them to make the most inflammatory posts possible.

    Factual news in General Discussion. News from reputable, reliable sources. And certainly not twisting the facts, omitting others, making up new ones and spinning it around to meet your pet theories about large scale conspiracies. NBC tried that by editing the 911 call in the Sanford shooting to make the most inflammatory news possible. Twisted the facts to attempt to make someone look like something they were not. And look where that got them. Facts, cold hard facts.

    Yeah, I'm a real downer and take all the fun out of everything.

    conspiracy theories are fun and all, but facts are a whole nother matter. Like Nazis in Sanford. Show me one!
    I want to see a Stinkin' Nazi in Stinkin' Sanford. Why? because they aren't there, and won't be there, but if "Da Nooz" says they are there, everybody will get their idiot on, and do stupid things.
    Realize when you are being played folks.
    I don't even find Alex Jones entertaining, well, at least not any more entertaining than Rosie O'Donnell.
    I can take both of them for about 10 minutes max, and usually, only by accident.

      I can't Stand the news because it is All a bunch of Twisted Biased BOAR SHIRT! Once the weather (which seems to be biased also) goes off so does the news.

        So what you are saying Grand is the Bilderburgs arent planning our extinction and implementing the NWO? Nibiru is not going to intersect with planet Earth? The Earth is not going to pass into the Photon Belt on Dec 21 2012 at the moment the sun goes down? That Alex Jones doesn't get his info from super secret teenage mutant ninja gerbles? And that Hillary Clinton is not a Draconian Reptilian and that they have an 9 level bunker in Dulce, NM where they do experiments on humans, breeding them with jellyfish and octopii? But whatever you do, dont talk about the 9th level there, oh my god dont. Thats Horror Hall!!!

        Well, at least Obama is going to suspend the election, implement martial law and all preppers will have to become live studio audience members of the Today show for eternity :)

          and amazingly the posters of all black ops former SF super secret squirell truths usually don't post/report one skill or usable piece of info that actually helps anyone but much like the nat geos one month clubbers they will rise up to make their voice heard loud and far and get the pot stirred and quickly accuse anyone of disagreement of being unpatriotic or the man or an ungodly supporter of the UN or a military robtic storm trooper uncapable of free thought and then they will quickly assualt your youtuber channel or e-mail with negative commentaries as though they exact power over you by doing so because they actually think that I care about them and finally they will continually comment on physical attributes or skill levels as though they themselves actually posses any having never left the suburbia driveway to break a sweat much less ventured into the mix.

            I suppose that the main stream media always tells the truth, Big Pharma is only concerned with providing us with the best medicine possible at the least cost, the NEA is trying its best to provide a godly education for our children, and that to believe otherwise makes me a conspiracy theorist.
            Scripture adjures us to discern, yet it seems that you are asking that I be gullible instead. Sorry can't do that.

              I had a big post I just accidentally deleted....gggggrrrrr!!! Oh well...I'll give the abbreviated version.

              It is important to verify everything before sharing it with the world on the internet but also important to understand there are many things going on behind the scenes that most of the world wouldn't believe. I'm reminded of a couple of WW2 double agents, Dusan Popov and Juan Pujol Garcia. Too much typing to tell you about them but these two men did Bond like things that were a great help in defeating the Germans. In fact the James Bond character was based on Dusan Popov. If you're into WW2 history look these guys up. Fascinating stuff!

                The only reason I watch/listen to the news is to be aware of what other people are hearing. It IS important to know that the 'incident' happened in Florida if for no other reason than to know what the possible public reaction is likely to be. Would you go to Sanford, FL, right now? No, because you know what's happening. Should we follow the implications to the 'Stand your Ground' law? Absolutely. This is only one example of why to be aware of what's being said. Not to take it as fact but to know what the public is being duped into believing. This can be crucial information in the long run. I listen/watch at least a couple leftist and a couple right-wing newscasts a day just to know what people are being told.

                As for conspiracy theories? There've been so many over the years that I treat them as what they are....rumors and propoganda. I might pass one on as a joke if it's that funny, but no more than that LOL

                  Never said anything of the kind. There are still reputable news sources outside of the MSM that do their fact checking and generally are objective in reporting. What I happened to rant on about was when people do NOT do their homework and take something at face value as "reported." Or those who omit facts to fit pet theories. Or even more so create links between separated facts to attempt to sway the minds of others into falsehoods. Read on for more on this particular item.

                  I decided not to use the word gullible because it tends to strike up negative thoughts. However, the definition of gullible per the web:

                  Some people are far too easy to dupe these days. And furthermore, they tend to accept anything told to them at face value. So yes, gullibility is rampant with some. But if we are to get into a spiritual debate about gullibility, the Bible teaches us one should discern the truth of the matter. And it's something I wholeheartedly agree with. And have the wisdom to know the difference in what is told and what one should know to be true. Scripture teaches us to have wisdom. Psalm 51:6 speaks of wisdom and truth.

                  "Behold, You desire truth in the inner being; make me therefore to know wisdom in my inmost heart."

                  So what is more important? Truth? Wisdom? Or having the wisdom to discern the truth and not be gullible? Proverbs 15:14

                  "The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly."

                  and furthermore, Proverbs 18:15

                  "The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out."

                  And yes, this can work both ways. If one was to believe the MSM or more specifically NBC during the Sanford situation, Zimmerman was a pure racist since he decided Martin was up to no good because "he looks black." However, cross referencing sources, receiving different viewpoints and most importantly, having ALL the facts of the matter is far more important than believing the first thing out of one reporter's mouth. The wisdom to know all was not as it appeared and there was more to the truth. And the discernment to know false teachings when they are seen.

                  But gullibility also means people can believe in crackpot theories without basis. "The Mayans predicted the world will end on 21 December 2012" or "Nibaru is coming to smash into the Earth" or one of my favorites "FEMA is preparing to open detention centers all across the country." People believe in this stuff without hesitation and without even thinking to question the motives of the people speaking them. 2 Peter speaks to false prophets and those who claim to know the future:

                  2 Peter 2:1-3 "But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping."

                  And in reference to the whole end of the world in 2012 thing? I would present Mark 13:32-33

                  "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come."

                  So false prophets predicting the end of the world as well as benefiting and profiting from it. Specifically mentioned in 2 Peter 2:3. Or generally reporting falsehoods with greed and intent to deceive. Same difference. Reporting things that are not true or omitting facts to fit a particular theory. There is no difference in lying or omitting facts. Both are falsehoods. Creating news stories from random facts that are not true to increase your ratings or to make money? Is this a falsehood? I believe it fits the definition. I believe Georg Lichtenberg puts it best:

                  "The most dangerous of all falsehoods is a slightly distorted truth."

                  as well as a funny, but true quote from the same person.

                  "If all mankind were suddenly to practice honesty, many thousands of people would be sure to starve."

                  So gullible? I don't ask you to be gullible. I ask for people to discern the truth before reporting it as fact.

                  Which do not have a great following. And Yoko Ono I care about...because? There are hundreds of groups out there which believe in population control and bringing the "earth into balance." Apples and oranges, this has nothing to do with conspiracy theories.
